Anyone had a club fitting at the Doug McClelland Golf Superstore at Silvermere? I think MattyV was on here the other day saying he had and had bought a 910 D2 from there - anyone else got any experience of them?

Keen to hear peoples thoughts before I book myself in. From what I can gather they have a wide variety of stock and a flightscope monitor on a driving range so you can actually see the ball fly as well as get the feedback from the machine.

I've never heard anything but positive things about the overall service or the shop's stock - the latter often quoted as the largest in the country!

I have heard good things about the fitting service. However I do find them pricey for sets of clubs. There is Precision Golf at Egham and somewhere (forgot the name near Leatherhead) that I think would be better and more competitive on price

Thanks Homer - saw this but I've already booked now. I'm particularly interested in the titleist 910 and Douglas mcclelland are selling for £199, which seems pretty good

Booked a slot for Saturday - will let you all know how I get on.

Cheers

Who are you seeing? My cousin is one of the pro's there. I went last year in January and had them take a look at my driver set-up (was with Jason) and it was excellent. Spent about an hour hitting drives and seeing all the feedback on the computer. In the end it was just a tweak needed to the driver settings - no hard sell to change drivers or buy anything; very impressive.

Here's my experience! I've had three fittings there: two driver, one iron...

1. The first driver fitting was a waste of space as I was fitted with something that really wasn't for my swing (I ended up purchasing). I could name the name of the pro, but I wont (not Jason btw)!
2. The second driver fitting was much better but I didn't buy due to previous experience. It was a different fitter though.
3. The iron fitting was a half a job due to inexperienced fitter. Got fitted for Clevelands with stiff shaft, being sold to me that the ball speed off the face was higher than my current clubs. It wasn't until later (+12months) that I realised that ball spin data was nearly 7900, meaning that the ball flight stalled (I noted this spin rate at time but wasn't knowledgeable enough to challenge).

My moral from the above and advice is to ensure that you get the most experienced and best guy. Look at the ball data and get him to explain. The big advantage with the 'Mere is that you can see the ball flight so pay attention to that. Lastly, ask what atmospheric conditions they set the Flightscope at and ensure that when you compare you current and test clubs, that the conditions are the same.

Hope you have a good experience. And I agree, it's an excellent pro shop and range.

Out of interest is there a charge for this as I am looking around for a driver fitting. I have a few places in mind and am just comparing them now.

Thank you

Excellent - my fitting is with Jason, seems like it should be a worthwhile experience.

The fee is £40, but they deduct £20 of that from any purchase you make at the time of the fitting.

I'm new to the world of fitting and launch analysis, what stats should I be looking for? And is there such a thing as an optimum spin rate / launch angle / whatever other data is measured?

In my opinion, it is quite legitimate to withhold the Stats - unless that is what you buy the Flightscope/Trackmn time for. These details are specific to the set-up you have at the time and will change if you use a different shaft, head pr settings! There is little point trying to use these figures except to compare different set-ups on the day.

If it's the Jason I know there there (I think there were 2 at one stage) then he is excellent. Went in there not long ago and was somewhat disappointed with the lack of real bargains, both in the shop and in the warehouse. Inn on the Lake serves nice beer an does great Sunday btw!

Jason Banting I think it is - only one pro called Jason on their website. His credentials as a coach seem good - some decent players plus Pollyanna Woodward! Now there's a treat for any pro!

Had my fitting on Saturday evening, it was with Jason Banting.

It was excellent, a really good range of options for me to try, swing analysis explained to me very clearly and also explained what the stats I was seeing meant for my ball flight etc.

I can't recommend Jason highly enough. If I lived a little nearer to Silvermere I would probably also have lessons with him.

I ended up going with the Titleist 910 D2 with a Project X Tour C73 shaft. Great club with a great shaft. Considered the 913 and the R11S, but couldn't justify the extra expense either of those options would involve given the results the 910 yielded were very similar.

Looking forward to trying it out properly!
