Do you not feel that there is no point to them ? there is no skill needed ?

I don't know how many of you have seen the interveiw with Jack Nicklaus were he talks about his favorite shots - almost all are 1 iron shots, we are going to loose this I can't imagine tiger once he has retired describing a puffy floaty hybrid shot as being the best of his career

Yes, I like hitting my 19deg Titliest hybrid, thanks.

I can count the number of great 1 irons I have ever hit on zero fingers. In fact, I can add all all the great 2 and 3 irons to that total and not need any more fingers.

Do you not think that it is sad to give up on somthing that defined the career of a legend just because it takes a bit of practice - golf is fast becoming a putting competion

Are we talking Tiger here as the greatest golfer of all time not carrying a 1 iron?

I really like hitting my hybrids. Sorry, Fybrids )

If they're good enough for paddy harry to win opens with, and i can hit them, then they're good enough for me!

really nice clubs to hit actually.

hey
I use Mizzy MP67'S and i bought a 2 iron about 5 months ago and must admit its a joy to hit (when hit right) but i also have a taylormade recue dual #4 in my bag which i luv and on them days (which we all have) when you cant hit a cows a**e with a banjo then its the rescue dual that always seems to drag me out of the Brown stuff. so i cant see me ever getting rid of it.

Hybrids v Long Irons - The debate!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Let me think.

Yeah I've got it.

Yes!! I'm with SS2 and Parmo on this one.
To start on the old "its traditional and the right way" etc etc, look at your clubs.

Do you have a large headed, graphite shafted driver?
Do you have a modernish putter -even an Anser style can be classed as modern.
Are your shafts steel, lightweight and flex-matched to your swing?
And do you use a ball that has "Drop and Stop" properties?

Answer yes to any of the above and you have admitted that you use modern equipment. Hybrids are the modern long irons - get used to it!

To be honest, I'd love to be able to strike a 1 iron sweetly, or even a 2, 3 or 4. But I can't with any consistency - that's why I'm never going on tour.

I am not against technology but it has to enhance the game - Tiger still carries a 2 iron when the course suits, you cant expect him to handicap himself when he is playing against golfers who's longest iron is a five ( Y E Yang )the rest are hybrids because they are so easy to hit

Quoting you signature freddielong.

Why is somebody a "muppet" if they choose to use a hybrid?

I suppose we are muppets for using 460cc drivers when we could go and get a little slazenger persimmon driver from 1979 or something.

So are you saying you can use all the modern equipment you like......except a hybrid? And if you do your a muppet.

Thats a well thought out argument.

I don't think the pros find them easier to hit, it is the trajectory which is appealing, hybrid has low centre of gravity therefore the balls gets up quickly, as they get higher they drop steeper and stop more quickly.

On a windy links course I dare say the 2 iron under the wind still has a place but in windless target PGA style golf the hybrid is often a better option.

I like hitting my 2 hybrid, good distance and forgiving. Also good for greenside chipping apparently but that's not a shot I know!

I got rid of my 4r utility from last year as although easy to hit it just went too high for me. :(

I can't imagine that any golfer has any advantage over Woods due to the clubs they carry.

A lot of them carry 2i's and such, for playing windy courses. When it isn't windy the hybrid comes out.

A hybrid is way more versatile than a long iron, for playing from rough, cabbage, chipping, etc. With the right model, you can play it low, high, cut it, whatever. If you have the skill, it can be done.

I have used a 1i, and a 2i, but they have long gone.It wasn't through lack of trying either, more lack of talent.

However, hybrids have been around as long as irons, look at a picture of Old Tom Morrises clubs, and you will see more hybrids than irons. Similarities to today? Possibly it is Niclaus who stands out as odd through not using a hybrid.

But do I enjoy hitting a hybrid. No. I don't enjoy hitting any of my clubs. They are tools. I enjoy the results, I enjoy scoring low, I enjoy winning. Hitting is a means to an end. If it was just about hitting, I would buy an indoor net, and save myself several 1000's a year.

Tiger wouldn't use one if it didn't help his game. And he's really played badly with this handicap over the years!! Pros use what is best for them - most don't carry 2 irons anymore, hardly any carry a 1 because they just don't get the job done as well as the hybrids. So us mere mortals are going to use them too.

And you need the same amount of skill to hit a 9 iron as you do a hybrid so according to your arguement we need to ban all irons with a loft greater than 25 degrees.
Hope you don't land in a bunker.

Give me the distance, accuracy, flight and consistency of a hybrid any day of the week. I play golf for enjoyment and love of the game not to struggle with driving irons week in and out, some golfers only get out at weekends and want to make the most of it.

If someone wants to struggle with a 1 iron that's not a problem for me as I will be the one with the hybrid shooting better scores and enjoying the game and that's the point of true golf, enjoyment not ego.

freddielong, oh how guilty you make me feel with my puffy shots. I think I will go back to the old days well away from these evil hybrids where I had, Driver,2 wood,3 wood, 5 wood, 7 wood.......no wait! wouldn't some anti wood protestor turn up waving a 1 iron at me when next I play?
