Was reading the other day that cold balls could go upto 10% less distance than warm ones.

Not sure whether this is correct but if so it would seem to be preferable to keep your balls in the house overnight rather than in your bag in the car.

Is what I have read correct please? Which are the best balls for winter conditions?

I keep 1 in my trouser pocket and alternate the ball in play with the one warming in my pocket every tee. The temperature very definitely affects the carry, lots of guys use a harder ball in winter to combat this.

If it worries you, put 2 spare balls in your trouser pockets and rotate which ball you play at each hole. Each ball gets the benefit of about 20 minutes body heat before being played.

Make sure you use different numbered balls and announce the number in play before each hole. That way no one can accuse you of cheating if you have to look for a ball in the rough.

Me for one just lift my kilt in front of a roaring fire.

Seriously though, I have always had the habit of keeping my golf ball in my hand and in my pocket between holes during winter months. I never seem to be any further then I usually am in front of my mates, so either they all do the same or you can't keep your golf balls warm past the first tee.

I can't remember where I read it now, but I read the same thing.

But...

They said it takes a golf ball about 10 hours of being in the cold for any significant performance loss, so overnight in the house should see it through the next days golf.

By the same token, it must take a similarly long time to fully warm one through if it's been in the boot of your car or the shed for a week, so taking one out of your bag and warming it in your pocket when you reach the golf club isn't going to do you any good.

It may have been baloney though :D

Warm or not mine still seek warmth in the thickest grass or bush. I did try it for a while and it became a chore checking what number I was using and restating it to my partners so I just keep the one ball going intil I lose it.

Which BUSH are you refering your balls to here Homer!!!

Certainly in cold conditions and at night time the ball doesn't travel as far in the air something to do with the air being heavier it is the opposite if you play in a higher altitude the ball will travel further in the air .

doesn't help me I hit it in the bushes in any condition.

I can remember a while back, Sam Torrance joking that Ken Brown used to put his balls in a mug of warm water before playing in the cold. Wether this is true or if it made any difference I don't know.
