Witness the attached image, in which the competitor's marker has entered the stableford points next to the gross score in Player A's column, and in so doing ignoring the Nett/Points Score column provided for that purpose.

Lots, perhaps even a majority, of our members used to do this, but after a number of occasions in which the competitions secretaries struggled to decipher what was written (particularly when corrections had to be made by the marker) we've had to lay down the law and insist that ONLY the gross score is entered in to each box in Column A. We started with some education, then some DQs, and now it's much better, but we still sometimes get scorecards completed like this (usually by new members).

But I don't understand the reason why people do this. It's as if they think the net/points column or row is valuable real estate which simply must saved for later! It's bizarre. Why do you all do this?! You're driving me crazy, I tell ya!

The nett/points score box can only hold one result (either for an individual or team result) so it has limited usefulness when I'm marking for the group (looks like that card can't even be used for a 4-ball)

Other scorecard layouts i've seen are much more player friendly

Quite a few of my friends do it like that. The only reason I've been given is that they've always played more social golf than comps.
Usually with just one guy in each group totting up all the scores.

Well it looks like most of the scores are wrong... to the OP , I'm happy for my card to have gross score only. No points or adding up the 9 and overall.

I was once on the comps committee. The number of illegible cards was shocking. I play with one bloke now who I try to engineer it so he’s not marking mine, or I’ve no idea what he’s written.

No DQ, but, for example, his score on the 2nd was 52, nil points! Nobody I know marks the card like that. Even in a 4BBB or aggregate comp you just put the relevant score in the "points" box.

In a comp I write the gross score in column A and the points in the end column as I am marking just one players scores.

If I am marking a better ball card, I put the gross scores in column A and B, put their individual point tally in the box for reference purposes and put the combined total in the points box. DQ seems harsh and is there a precedent in the rules

When marking for one player or a team, all the space should be used properly. I run a society and it boils my water when people do this or go further and mark everyone’s score on one payer’s card. Can’t tell them though as they latch onto it and all start doing it!

I've always marked that way, most I play with do the same. I'd have started simply be copying someone else when I first played and never changed, never even thought of it since seeing this thread. The only slight difference is I add a diagonal mark to differentiate the shots and stableford points.

Having checked Open cards at my club previously I can't remember seeing anyone marking as requested by the OP. Not a criticism, just an observation.

Yes... just WHY does a 7 H/capper do this??? after being asked to do differently.
I guess DQs would be for 'unreadable cards'. Cant be for the example.
And, yes we had the same problem, largely, from new members... education has worked & now if playing with fresh partners, have a quick look to see how they're scoring my card.

We use IG now and do not need to mark points scored, whether it's a single player of better ball, just put the gross score in the relevant column.

If I'm marking a swindle card for a group of 3 or 4, then it's score/ points in each column.

There's no way a club can DQ a player for the shoddy way his marker has entered the score! They can take other action, such as banning the marker from entering a subsequent comp if, after education, they don't change.

Before doing so, they should publish a sample card filled out properly - even providing the sample to all players.

Having been a Competitions Sec - before PSI systems made life easier, I can empathise with the OP's 'problem'. But education is the way to solve it, not disqualification.

i tend to do this and prob the little group that i play with in the Nairn Dunbar winter comps all do too, ease of knowing what score you are on. its a NQ comps so not the end of the world. I didn't play i single stableford q comp last year so not an issue for me... i would be miffed if i got a DQ just for this TBH

Down the years I seem to recall 5/2 being the most used format for writing scores on the card.
In bounce games I do this all the time but in a comp I do use the columns for gross, nett and points...
I've seen the point written slightly below the gross score before as well...
