Do you add up your score at half way?

I played on Sunday in a medal round, was ticking around nicely and then made an absolute hash on the 9th.. I kind of knew in my head where I was, but that was just estimates.

Normally when we get to half way, I will calculate the player I'm markings score but not tell them unless asked. With mine, I mostly just leave it, unless I'm playing poorly I will check what I need to finish up well. The chap whose card I was marking was playing well and when he saw me adding the scores he told me he doesn't do half way scores to which I said "that's fine, neither do I" and I kept it to myself (just makes it quicker adding up at the end)..

After hearing us talk about not working out scores, the chap who was marking my card, who'd started to annoy me during the round anyway due to multiple irritants, then asked me "Do you want to know your score? its 45.."

Great... He had answered the question himself, thanks.

I still managed to push round after a poor turn from 9-11 for a net 73.

Does anyone else prefer not to calculate after 9 holes?

I usually know my score in my head, but to be honest I'd rather just be able to forget it and find out at the end so I can cut out all the "if I finish 4,4,5 I'll get a .." nonsense

I prefer to know. For no other reason than I like to know :) . This weekend I knew that after 16 holes I had 36 points in the bag so it allowed me to play more aggressively on the last two. 17 I had an eagle putt and 18 I pushed the drive as I was trying to hammer it. Ended up with 4 points over the two holes which should've been 5. But knowing the score allowed me to play a little more freely knowing I already had my score (36) in the bag.

Unless im playing utter rubbish i will know how im going v par & my handicap ,

if im playing really bad il just forget it and play for par's or practice the rest of the round , usually determined by how my playing partners are going , if they are going well we all play serious so as not to affect them , if not we will practice or play for a couple of euro for the back 9..

Whether I want to or not I'll know exactly what I've scored.

Funnily enough on our Friday battles, Fragger, who keeps the score ( we have a rule - highest handicapper keeps the score) will always tell us on the 18th tee where we all stand - unless it's really close between him and me in which case he keeps quiet!

Rarely; usually have a vague idea but don't care much and just add it all up until the end. My gameplan has nothing at all to do with the score and is just dependant upon the shot in hand - I like to keep it that way.

I normally do I think....

Although it doesn't tend to affect me, as a general rule I know if I'm on a good score or not regardless of whether I'm told so it doesn't affect my mental state.

nope, i know whether i am scoring well or not, but i am not fussed about actual score at halfway, i end up counting on from there and as someone else said, you get the "i only need XY or Z" on 17 and 18 to break par, thats when the wheels come off!

I have an idea, but I usually gauge on how far over/under level fives I am.

I think it helps me to focus better if I know I've turned in -2 under fives, rather than 43 for some reason. Knowing my stroke score I often start trying to shoot pars or better and often messing up rather than taking the mentality that a four isn't a disaster on a par three and a 5 isn't a distaster on any hole and can see me put together a good round.

It doesn't always work like that though, as three consecutive 0.1s recently attest... :(

We play our comps in fourballs so you tend to swap cards in pairs normally which may be a reason why, but almost everyone I've ever played with will add up and compare halfway. Never had anyone say "I'd rather not know" or similar......I mean how can you not know your own score anyway after only 9 holes? I have come across players who'd rather not say or be told that they have (say) 2 shots left on the 18th tee but that's different and I'd never mention scores at that stage.

I couldn't tell you how far over or under par/handicap I am at any point during the round usually. One shot at a time and concentrate the same for each one.

I usually have a rough idea where I'm at but I dont really care about knowing my exact score. Most people I've played with will do a halfway check to make sure the numbers add up whilst it's still relatively fresh in the mind but I'll always ask the person whose card I'm marking if they want to know just out of courtesy. Without wanting to offend anyone though I do think it's just making excuses if you finish the round poorly and blame it on knowing the score. Just my opinion.

I have no idea how I'm doing after 9 holes. Honestly. I have forgotten every shot I've hit, unless I consciously think about it, after a couple of holes. Numbers confuse me at the best of times, so I find they don't stay in my head. Also, I can't do anything about what I've scored before, so why bother trying to retain it during the round (I can always remember every shot post-round though for analysis). I'm putting my score in the marker's column, so there's a record if I need it.

I always ask my marker not to tell me what I'm on (strokes or points) coming off the 9th green, but ask the person I'm scoring if they want to know.

It's probably my nemesis, playing well, look at the card and think, 9 shots from the last two holes for PB then go put one in the river or behind a tree.

Although tbh Sunday I played maybe my best golf for a long time, 4 birdie chances on the front nine, on the 11th par 5 in two, just missed the long eagle put then another coupe of birdie chances. back nine finished +1 gross playing stableford of 14 I totalled 42 points overall and that included a blob.

I cant ever remember a time when I didn't add my score, and the persons who's card I'm marking, half way round . I usually tell them, to in order to check my maths, unless they have asked me specifically not too

I tend to add the players card I'm marking after nine and will tell him if asked or keep quiet if not. I always know what I've scored but it makes no difference to me. New Golf Thinking - one shot at a time!!!!!!!!!!!
