Do Par three Holes Have Fairways

At our course ,for all sorts of reasons ,we are still playing lifting and placing on fairways,some members say that par 3 holes dont have fairways so there is no lifting and placing,I lifted and place on a par 3 today in the seniors comp and was told i should be subject to a penalty shot,I explained that the assistant pro had told me that par 3 do have fairways...what constitutes the fairway? ,is it where the grass is cut short or what?,because one guy says that the rough is also cut...I will be asking for a local ruling but can you help please

When I used to play at Crowborough, it was considered that none of the par 3's had fairways. This was a "local" rule though. Not heard of it anywhere else.

Preferred lies doesn't just apply to fairways, it applies to mown grass. Most par 3s have an area of mown grass before the green and this would count for preferred lies.

Unless of course you have a local rule that says it doesn't. Sounds like you need to seek clarification from your committee

Check the way the local rule is written. The sample provided by the R & A states the following:

“A ball lying on a closely-mown area ......."

followed by

Note: “Closely-mown area” means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

You should really make sure you read the local rules before you go out as they may not be on the back of the card but on a notice board in the club somewhere!

Fairways don't exist! - at least in terms of rules for pick and place. The term is close-mown areas i.e. mown to fairway height or less (OK, fairways do exist). If where you landed conformed to that description then you were perfectly entitled to pick and place.

Also referred to as preferred lies, you are allowed to lift your ball, clean it and replace within a set distance (usually 6 inches I believe).

The simple answer is hit the green. I think if its a closely mown area there is nothing to worry about unless there's a local rule that says different. Always best to check the noticeboards or ask
