Two most used tools in my garage/workshop are my pillar drill and my band saw.
As above, a good cordless drill/driver and a good corded drill for more stubborn jobs should see you well, amazing thr number of fangled attachments that go on drills these days to do other tasks.

One of the first items I acquired when moving into my first home, 40 or so years ago, was a B&D workmate... Still got it [a bit battered and bruised but not broken] used this for many 'projects' over the years and would've been lost without it... Every workshop should have one without a doubt...

Good call!

Mine is battered and bruised too, and wouldn't be without it! And it has the flip out legs to make it higher for some jobs - very useful.

Depends on what sort of wood you are going to work with. If you will be using hardwoods, then generally they will come from the timber yard sawn, so a planer/thicknesses will be very useful. I wouldn't be without mine. Also bandsaw. Dust extraction is a must. I have a table saw which is always in use. For sharpening hand tools I use Japanese water stones - the edge they get is amazing - and you don't have the mess of oil around wood. If you are in to hand tools, make friends with eBay.
