Distance over scores

No goal posts have moved, this is what I wrote, it was and is still correct.

If you cannot comprehend that individually people who hit shorter might score better than those who hit further but IN GENERAL those hitting 240 will score better than those hitting 220 then you are either thick or well really thick

Well i guess i am then.

Accuracy does not come with distance, it must be lots of us with 'THICK' heads that believe this and you must be the mostest cleverest person here who knows that we are all wrong.

I can smash it to 250 time after time and most will be in the rough, but ease of a little and they might go 230 and be closer to the fairway, guess what voila easier 2nd shot, not as many obstacles in the way and lower scores. I think (notice I didn't say know, because I have not surveyed the millions of golfers around the world to give you a factual answer) that most club level golfers are of the same school of thought and would generally agree that they would much rather be 20 yards shorter but in the fairway EVERY DAY.

Why not try to post a vote in a new thread see how well you get on with your theory.:D :D :D :D

I think what he was suggesting is that this thread isn't about whether longer is better, it's about whether worrying about how far others hit it is relevant to your scores. How far you hit it is important, how far others hit it isn't

I agree, i couldn't care less at how far anybody else hit, and to be honest as long as my shot length for each club is consistent I'm happy, if I hit the same club inconsistent distances the game would be even harder.

There are too many other variables to make sweeping statements like this.
So 60% of players hit it further than the other 40%....
To assume they, in general, will score better, assumes their approach shots are better, their pitches and chips are better, their putts are better.......and you simply can't .

What will agree with is that if someone can hit the ball 20 yards further and still keep the ball in play, they may have a higher chance of scoring better if the rest of their game is up to it.
There's no guarantees in this game

Having said that.....
When I play with CVG, I know that he is about a club shorter than me through the irons. If he has the honour, uses a 7 and stuffs it close, of I'm in any doubt I now know that a decent 8 will get me there....so it can be useful.

I am a short hitter so inevitably hit more club into greens than many of my PP's. Do I care? Not at all. As long as my shot goes where I want it to and I am scoring well, what they do is irrelevant to my game

Well I agree with 99etc.etc.

There will be shorter hitters who can score better than longer hitters but in the overall picture, a longer hitter is a better swinger of the golf club than a shorter hitter, they will have a better technique to get it out there and it will give them a solid advantage for their subsequent shots.

Yes, some long hitters will spray the ball all over the place in going for distance above all else, but these are just forum big boys.
The genuine better player (and to be really good you need to hit it long) will also have the intelligence to use that length when the occasion demands it and likewise ease off if it could lead to trouble.

How far anybody else hits the ball is irrelevant to me. I'm usually the longest in my group but sometimes I'm not and it doesn't bother me in the slightest, although I've seen it ruin other peoples games until they stop trying to compete.

Saying on average 240 hitters will score better than 220 hitters is akin to Bertrand Russell's china teapot.

The only thing I can say with confidence is that if player A suddenly develops another 20 yards off the tee without losing any accuracy or other parts of his game, he has a very good chance to score better than usual.

Men like to hit things a long way, it's for the macho image. Telling your partner that he's using a club longer than you are is like taking a dig at his masculinity. It's like they say, size doesn't matter, it's how you use it ;)

In a comp yesterday, my PP had a dig at me about how I used a 20* hybrid on a par 3, whilst he had used a 6 iron. When we got to the green, I was 5 yards past the hole, and he was 40 yards short.

Surely it's common sense that it's better to be accurate and than to hit long. If you can do both, you would probably be a pro :P
