Disappointing Courses

Played it last month too and was great. I would certainly be a member if i lived close
Like i said, always happy to play a course like that. Cant help but think golf England having their HQ there has something to do with its ranking.
Fair enough if you have played it in both summer and winter. I don't think having England golf has kept its place in the rankings as it was top 30 before they took over and now its top 50.

That just shows it's horses for courses:whoo:

We played saunton west together and I loved it, I can recall all the holes, my special favourite was the par 5 where Paul 4 putted from 5 feet :D

Agree about RND though. The cape bunker hole and the par 4 next to the sea are brilliant holes, the rest are average at best.

ah no, i heard good things about RND and i am booked in to play 2 opens there this month! we shall have to see!

Your right mate it is horses for courses.
Haha just had a little chuckle to myself about Pauls four putt.
No Gimmies.
Everytime I see him it crops up,he will never forget that.:D

Always wanted to play Faldo's 1st designed course Chart Hills and did so in a mid amateur event last year. Liked the layout and some of the holes but it's condition of it by its present owners, left a lot to be desired tbh.

Totally agree. Lovely course and some great holes, but it is fairly obvious they are short of cash and therefore the clubhouse needs a lick of paint/updating and the course is simply surviving rather than flourishing. Lots of bunkers GUR as they can't keep up the maintenance, paths not kept and fairways a little long in places. All easily fixed, but needs investment.

The worse part when I last played (4 weeks ago) was a bunker on the first par 3 that they had filled with blacktop! One of the guys I was with hit a skier into that and I reckon the ball is just about landing in Surrey as we speak.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good course, it's really different and packed with character. It's just not top 100 material IMO.

I'd play it again gladly, but only as a spare day option not a destination. If I was local I'd definitely go back.

Hoylake, played it immediately the day after playing Formby and a week after playing Wallasey and was left very disappointed as it had been bigged up so much.

When people are simply saying "The Belfry", I assume they mean the Brabazon, there are 3-courses?

For course condition, Ingol near Preston. I lost half doz golf balls plugged in the middle of fairways.

For the frosty welcome in the clubhouse and the ignorant, arrogant member I encountered out on the course, Hunstanton. I'd looked forward to playing it so much on a tour of north Norfolk courses. Played Royal Cromer, Royal West Norfolk, Sheringham and then Hunstanton... maybe I need to return and give it a 2nd chance.

For me the 2 that have good reviews that I didn't rate were RND and Saunton West.
Just found both quite boring,in fact im having trouble remembering the holes which
tells me they were not memorable.

You have to be joking about Saunton West, Tony? Far, far more character than the East...

To be honest Jezz I was not joking.
However the op was asking what courses were a disappointment.
Having heard so many good things and how high it was rated, maybe I had
built it up so much in my head I was a little bit disappointed when I played it.

Its interesting you mention Character when comparing the East and West.
Maybe we look at courses differently,of course you have way more experience than me
about course reviews, but as a test the East imo is much more of a test.
That begs the question are we looking for a test or character when assessing
a course.
Maybe I need to get down there again and have another look.
It just goes to show how hard it must be to do a review as people see courses so different.
On a side note have you ever got down as far as Ilfracombe and done a review,i would
love to here what you think.

But you are definitely softening up as you get older Tony - I swear you gave at least 3 puts over 6 inches at Salisbury!!

This sort of 'disappointment' is reasonably common. I know an old club of mine has a great, if occasionally Marmite, layout but has constantly lacked sufficient investment.

Stockley Park (now Stockley Pines) was/is another that has a great layout - albeit with some huge walks between holes - but the condition can be dire. That was a victim of timing and an earlier recession and has never really recovered!

Valderaama - in mint condition but all the par 4's looked the same, can't even remember the par 3's. A couple of nice par 5's although not the 17th. Not helped by having to play off the yellow tees which made it a pitch and putt course eg hit the 17th green with drive and a 9 iron as downwind. Also, made to feel very unwelcome - not allowed in the member's part of the clubhouse - shunted to a tiny cafe bar that was a bit greasy spoon and only allowed on the range 30 minutes before tee time. Not good value for 190 euros about 8 years ago...never again!!

Glad I'm not the only one! Played it 12 years ago for €140, and a rubbish breakfast cost €20. Lovely pyramids of Titleist balls on the range is my lasting memory, which doesn't say much. However, we did at least play off longer tees, so 17th was driver 3 wood for me at that time!

Other disappointment was Woburn Dukes, for the reason G1bbo mentions; it's just a bit "meh", compared to the other two.

There's no doubt the East is a sterner, slightly uncompromising test right from the start with that 470-yard par 4, but I just felt there was more variety and perhaps playability on the West, which has a cracking 1st hole and then makes good use of is closer proximity to the highest dunes.

But as has been said many times here, one man's meat and all that...

And yes, I have played Ilfracombe actually on the day I got engaged 15 years ago, which was also my birthday and also, sadly, the day Payne Stewart died. I really enjoyed it - lots of character, and some interesting holes, but then I've always enjoyed courses like that perhaps because my first ever golfing holiday was to a place called Mullion in Cornwall which bears some similarities in places to Ilfracombe.

The one I really want to play soon is Thurlestone to see if the quality of the course lives up to the spectacular views...

I was rather disappointed with East Sussex National when I played there earlier this year. Both courses there were in far worse condition than our home course. Hotel was OK though. :(

Surprised nobody has mentioned it yet (perhaps for blasphemy?) but the Old Course at St. Andrews has to be overrated and underwhelming personified. As a venue to attract tourists and nostalgia seekers it has no rivals, but to actually play on the hallowed turf is quite frankly a pretty boring course save a couple of holes. Disappointing is an understatement really.

I considered that, but I've never actually been disappointed with it - and I've played it 5 times!

Sure it's not a stunningly difficult course, but it was never 'disappointing'!

The New Course is my favourite of the 3 I've played, though the Jubilee was probably a tad tougher.

TOC would be a very disappointing course to try and play on a Sunday though!
