Following on from the Top 5 you have played

Which courses have you been looking forward to playing but end up being disappointed with or underwhelmed

For me it would be Berkhampstead - talked up a lot around here but was disappointed by it - found it lacked character and was a bit boring , standard was ok but just didn't seem to flow well as a course

Luton Hoo always falls into this category for me. Mainly the entrance feels quite grand nice old trees etc then it just feels like they bulldozed the land for the course and shoved 18 flags on it

I don't think I've been really disappointed anywhere, though there was 1 course that I can't remember the name of that was not really good value for the tenner it charged!

The following 2 are probably the only ones that I've felt somewhat let down by....

The Brabazon. Expected it to be a lot better than it was, though there are 3 or 4 really good holes (I don't include 10 in those!)

Archerfield Fidra. Again, expected a lot more from the course. Greens were actually slower than I was used to for some reason. Everything else about the place was absolutely top notch though! And quite cheap as a guest too!

Btw. Phil. It's Berkhamsted these days!

Brabazon, thought it was in great nick, but too many forgettable holes.

De Vere Dunston Hall, my first experience of a hotel chain course. Went on a 3 day golf weekend. The hotel and spa were faultless, but the golf course was in absolutely disgusting condition.

Chilterns Forest near Aylesbury.... Found it very ordinary. Some nice holes, some simply ridiculous crossover holes and you need to be related to a Mountain Goat!!!!

Totally agree with the Brabazon at the Belfry. Totally over-rated and they try to rip you off from the minute you walk through the door.

Presume with B&B you were expecting it to be exceptional and it was only outstanding? :)

Moving from Scotland to England I was told by quite a few West Country golfers that it was the best links course in England so I had high expectations. Good but I would not even say exceptional.

Probably would not make the top 20 in Scotland.

For different reasons I was quite impressed with The Belfry, expected it to be rubbish and it was not.

Oh dear! I'm going there in early September for a week.

How long ago was it?

Nice course but I expected so much more after hearing so many good reviews, it just didn't get my attention and looking 5 mins for a ball on the fairway really didn't impress me either.

When I saw B & B was ranked higher than Saunton East, I thought it was going to be better than it was. Nice course , some lovely holes, but overall I was a bit disappointed. Personally think Saunton East is a much better course.

I would add that some of the holes had flooded, it had snowed on the way to the course, and we finished in the dark. Not sure what the last there holes looked like.;)

Most disappointing course I have played is Royal North Devon. It might be the oldest Club in England, but both times I have played there it was in poor condition, and the greens were bumpy, more like temps. The front nine has some lovely links holes 4-8, but the back nine is a real disappointment. The natives are not very friendly either.

The Castle course in St Andrews was disappointing, though only for the greens. Loved the course, club, people and everything else about the place, but the greens were Mickey Mouse.
