Disappointing Courses

There's a few courses I'd not go back to, but I wasn't expecting much of them anyway so the only one I was really dissaponted with was first time we played the Nicklaus Course at Carden Park. Had got my expectations up for it to be an awesome track, after all it's got the Golden Bears name attached, but just didn't feel it.

However I've been back there a few times now (playing both courses) and I quite like it as I've not got the same high expectations.

Out of the 'Hotel Golf' golf weekends we've been on we rated Carden park as the best when assessing the overall quality of both courses, as most of them have one decent track but one very average one.

I think we went with not huge expectations, and whilst it will in no means blow you away and there are much better single courses in terms of quality, we thought the combination made for a very good pair of courses.

A friend of mine visited the Isle of Purbeck earlier this year.

Was really looking forward to it but some of the fairways were in such poor nick that even with pickandplace there was nowhere decent within the standard distance to put a ball down with any sort of a lie !

Yes must admit I was a little disappointed with Carden hole by hole but as overall as courses I thought they were ok (if that makes sense). Think its the 16th Par 4 on the Cheshire which when we played it is one of the best/picturesque holes I've played. I preferred the Cheshire to the Nicklaus overall.

IOP is situated on National Trust land (or something similar) which prohibits them from using various chemicals so the course often suffers from poor conditioning. It's a real shame because some of the holes there are outstanding.

Woodhall spa. have to say i thoroughly enjoyed the place and would snap a chance up to go again but a top 10 course? Most definitely not.

Woburn Dukes... played it twice and still not a fan. A bit samey and not a fan of the signature hole either, its just a severely downhill par 3 thats a bugger to decide what club! :)

You did play it at the start off march in the winter, come back again now and I am sure you will change your mind. It's definitely a top 10 course.

Not a big fan of Silvermere. Aside from the length of rounds and lack of etiquette from weekend hackers, once you get past the first few holes in the trees the holes are all rather open and samey. The par 3 seventeenth is a decent hole as is the last now to an island green but overall it has too many negative for me. The greens are usually in poor condition too

It was a nice nine hole course, but the extra nine holes were built in a big field.:(

Nice clubhouse, and Pro shop though.

B & B , heard so much about how good it was , saunton east is better , caslte hume , yes agreed with that , Woplesdon , thats a good course so disagree on that , Alhruhin spain , thats got to be the worse and the 2010 course , just a big field with ponds , better off fishing

Played it last month too and was great. I would certainly be a member if i lived close
Like i said, always happy to play a course like that. Cant help but think golf England having their HQ there has something to do with its ranking.

Always wanted to play Faldo's 1st designed course Chart Hills and did so in a mid amateur event last year. Liked the layout and some of the holes but it's condition of it by its present owners, left a lot to be desired tbh.

I played it 2 weeks ago and it was as good as I've seen it. The greens were fine, the fairways patchy but they always are. The layout is brilliant. It's never gonna be the belfry.

I've only 1 to add to the list. Celtic manor 2010, the opposite of isle of purbeck, great greens, fairways better than my carpet, but seriously lacking in charecter and soul:o

For me the 2 that have good reviews that I didn't rate were RND and Saunton West.
Just found both quite boring,in fact im having trouble remembering the holes which
tells me they were not memorable.

That just shows it's horses for courses:whoo:

We played saunton west together and I loved it, I can recall all the holes, my special favourite was the par 5 where Paul 4 putted from 5 feet :D

Agree about RND though. The cape bunker hole and the par 4 next to the sea are brilliant holes, the rest are average at best.
