Just received a letter from Seaford Town Council, who run seaford head golf course

basically it says the credit company they use for taking DD has made an error and not been taking money from my account.

i spoke to the pro before i got the letter and this has happened to 18 people.

anyway the letter tells me to send in a cheque for £460. which i dont have as i only got £5 in my bank as my car broke down this month.

what should i do?

You've had it i'd say!!!

If you've been playing but not paying, and if you hadn't noticed the error and tried to correct it yourself, I cant see that there is much you can do :(

If you cant afford it all at once, take the letter to the club secretary and see if you can come to an agreement, in the current climate i'm fairly sure they'll try to accomodate you as best they can.

Hard one to take, but, you've played all season without paying so they can do whatever is necessary to extract paymment from you.

the dd is still on my account, just not been taking cash! surely they should have realised 5 months ago

i dont have a spare £460, unless i sell my golf stuff

will contact the person who sent the letter explaining that i dont have any money!

i suspect i will be without a club this winter

Just be carefull what you say to them. You've entered into an agreement to pay a years subs in installments. They may well be looking for that full years subs. Walking away may not be an easy option, they may chase you for it thorugh other means.

I'd have thought the onus is with the club. If the DD agreement has been set up the responsibility to take the money is with them and not for the player to manage it by checking the bank balance for them. If the OP is happy where he is, my advice would be to be upfront and say you can't afford to make such a large one-off payment and ask to pay it back over a set period or offer to have an increased DD deducted over the remainder of the period to cover the outstanding balance. If the club values its membership in any way it should be open to such suggestions

Actually, if your course have applied for the direct debit to the your bank, have a look here as you may be able to point the finger at your bank and get assistance somewhere.

If your club hasn't applied to the bank for the direct debit then surely it is your club's error and they have to try and accomodate you if you cant pay in full immediately.

You will have to pay, but assuming it was a cock-up on the part of the club or the bank, they will have to be reasonable with the time frame they allow to make it up.

Sorry Steve but your liable , speak to the secretary and ask to amend the amount taken each month and pay the £460 over the balance of the year.

The mistake has to be someones and therefore I would find out exactly who failed to do their job, that shouldn't be too difficult to ascertain, and ask them for (at least) a contribution toward restitution. I would then offer to pay back the balance over the period you are comfortable with, say double payment for a year or even the arrears over 2 years plus this years.

Whilst you should have realised that the payment wasn't being taken if the Councils bank made a mistake then they have to be fair!
