damned rough

That's how rough should be - easy to find ball but punishes you for being in it

100% with you on that.

I was just trying to say that even though that type of rough doesn't look frightening, it is very much harder to play from than the scary looking stuff a lot of the time. :)

If you really do swing the club like Hogan and hit it equally straight, no wonder you don't have a problem with the rough!

My driving has been uncannily good this year...it's the rest that's gone to pot :) And now having to change the swing - so it may no longer 'be like Hogan' and I'm expecting my driving to go wonky as well - at least for a while.

love this comment;
"Pros miss half the fairways they play, and are not losing balls."
Maybe that's because there are spotters and rows of spectators on each fairway!!!!!

Perhaps then it would make sense for clubs not to leave rough too deep, as members don't have spotters & spectators, and so won't keep losing balls or takings ages finding them or playing provisionals repeatedly?

In general I find that it's not how deep it is - it's how close it is to the fairway that matters. If it's deep and close enough to the fairway for you to get into as you are spraying your driver all over the place off the tee - then as per another post here - put the driver away and use a 3w or maybe a 3i.

Anyone can hit a wild one at any time, on any hole, with any club.
You might be striping it down the middle but then carve one way right into the bundu.
We're Amateurs - we hit bad shots.

My driving is pretty poor at the moment, so last night playing a tie, i used my 18 deg hybrid off the tee's that have been costing me.

parred all of them, taking the trouble out. Two of those par 4 i played as 3 shoters and the 18th which is a par 5 thats reachable in two normally. I think you have to adapt to how the course is playing

Sorry but what you play is not golf, it is just hitting.
To play the sport well you need to have the intelligence and skills to adapt to the conditions.

To cut the rough so hackers can get round without losing a ball is not the answer.

If only your political views were so succinct and correct!

Are we talking "set aside" or just plain ole "unkept rough" as the rough on our course at the moment is set at 2" with a cut height of about 1.75" but because it's all standing up rather than laid over the ball sit's rite down deep in it and its an absolute flaming nightmare to get out of as the club head drags through it killing any club head speed you'd built up even the rescues are struggling !...:smirk:

Our rough is just unkempt, waist high and full of thistles in places! Your 'rough' sounds pretty ideal to me, if you can even think of using a rescue club from it. At ours if you are a very good and strong golfer you might just manage to hack the ball back out onto the fairway with a sand iron. That is if you can find it in the first place! :(

If Matt Kuchar was playing in a Gullane members medal yesterday he would have lost at least three balls and probably have been accused of holding up play.

Played Royal Lytham Saturday and Fairhaven Sunday and the length of the rough 5 yards off tight fairways was unplayable for the majority of amateur golfers. 10 yards off line with the drive resulted in a provisional off the tee, a good four man search for the first ball and if found a hack out sideways. The penalty for a very slightly off-line drive affected the length of the round as well as the score and after a while you just get sick of trudging through the rough hoping to stumble across what was a below average tee shot but certainly not a poor one.

They've cut some of the rough down at ours a couple of weeks ago so it's better than it was. What gets me is when your drive hits the middle of the fairway but then as they're rock hard it bounces off never to be found. Happened to me a couple of times in the medal the other week. If it was offline fair enough but they weren't:(

Maybe (according to some on here) you should have kept your ball in play by using a 9-iron for every shot!

True and I also shouldn't be playing the course as I'm female, a high handicapper and I can't shoot under 100 in a competition;)

Sounds lovely, glad I'm not playing from it, is there an issue with understaffing or lack of suitable machinery or just lazy ground staff !...

Is anyone else picturing fairways 20yards wide with what looks like hedges running down either side.

That rough looks pretty daunting.

The course. That living, breathing, beautiful animal bares its teeth and people cry like little gi... children.

Suck it up. No 40 odd pointers are likely to win. 39 is an excellent score and people are still shooting that.
