Playing well at the moment, but scores not coming down really.
Finding that the rough on my course is ridiculous, its usually a lost ball or hack out at the very best.
Its starting to get on my wick now as you can miss fairway by a yard and you get killed.
should the greenies scythe it down a bit? It seems harsh to get penalised so much for being just a fraction out.
Its not as though we are getting major run on fairways either as their pretty sodden too.
Its only been in the past month that its just sprouted up.

the weather is such that everything is growing so fast I suspect the "greenies" are concentrating on keeping the greens good tees decent and sorting the rough when they get chance.
Mans course management and maybe fairway wood of tee is the way to go?

its the same at ours with all the wet weather a night and warm temps during the day, so perfect growing conditions.

But Im all for there being a premium on accuracy. Caddied for a mate in another clubs scratch final and the guy he played against didn't hit a fairway, but found his ball every time and was usually only hitting a wedge he was so far down, where as my mate didn't miss a fairway and got no reward for doing so.

Some of our par fours are well over 450 yards. So if i am going to get near green in two, i really need to maximise my distance off the tee.

Ours the same miss fairway by 5 yards and its knee deep.Ball lost all day long.
dont mind it long if you are a long way off line.At the moment a bad bounce and you are on for a big score.

If the rough is that deep so close to the fairway the greens staff need talking to. I have no issue with rough close to the fairway being such that it makes the shot to the green more difficult, that's what rough is for, but the really ugly stuff should be far enough out that if you're in it then you deserve it.

The trouble comes when you get all 4 players looking for a lost cause for 5 minutes.

I believe there was something in GM recently about this causing slow play.

However who wants to play on a course where you can lose a dozen balls.

what's wrong with 2 hybrids and a chip and putt?

With my shot game it would be a chip and two putts..ha ha
I dont see why i should have to dramatically change my game because the rough has allowed to get out of control. As others have said it shouldnt be a lost ball just off the fairway in the same way it shouldn't be an easy shot to the pin either.

Our long rough is a good 10 yards off the fairway, so no issues with having to chip out sideways (if I can find it) from there, if it's in there it's as a result of a wayward shot.

What's getting me down is the second cut of rough (of three in total) which is 5 yards off the fairway, ankle deep and grabs the club like nobody's business.

Yes I should be in the fairway or first cut, I know that, but it's brutal.

it would depend what your handicap was i suppose, but for most 450+ hole is likely be a hi SI, so bogey would be fine unless you are in Cat1.

Golf condition changes though the season, that's one of the beauties of the game learning how to adapt.. learn to play the course and the conditions, its club golf in the UK, its not the PGA tour where its all about driving distance.

I appreciate that. Golf for me is about enjoyment. I like to blast drives and try and get on gir at every hole possible.

I don't want to play conservatively to the point i am either playing everything as a par more or sinking single puts for par, i would rather chuck it tbh.

Hopefully the greenies will get the scythes out and make the course play fairer.

are you off a +handicap then?

Our long rough at Batchworth Park hasn't been cut since Autumn last year and is getting a bit ridiculous in my opinion. If you go even a few inches in it's probably going to be a lost ball, and even if you find it, you might find it difficult to hack it out, even with a sand wedge. The only good news is that the green keepers have widened the semi-rough a bit this year after scores of complaints from the members. Still getting slow rounds because of higher handicappers (and some lower handicappers) searching for their golf balls in the deep rough! Makes golf less enjoyable! :(

Its a bit silly at ours at the moment. The issue has been raised numerous times and lack of man hours available has been the main culprit. I don't mind it if it's really where you shouldn't be but there's a few places where a slightly miss hit shot is a lost ball. We are after all club golfers of differing hcps, we play for enjoyment not a living. Also the slow play part has a big impact.
