A quick response. You make some very good points. But.....

No I don't think I am the only person who played in the 80's with good players but thanks for asking.

Yes Mark Roe would be custom fitted but he played golf for a living and there is a bit of difference between this and some mid-handicapper from the Midlands.

Lastly, instead of a sardonic response alluding to me being stuck in a time warp with Heaven 17, Roland Rat, Leg Warmers and Airwolf, why not describe how your game dramatically improved after you had your latest Star Trek shafts fitted? I bet you can't.....

My CF specialist said that the Star Trek shafts would take my game where no game has gone before. Unfortunately he also said I have a tendency to Klingon to the club too much during the downswing, and flip the hands at warp factor speed.

It's like listening to some cerebral radio 4 comedy programme with Sandi Toksvig and Stephen Fry, (I’m not sure who is who)

However back to custom fit, if it’s free (or reimbursed if a purchase is made) it can’t do any harm. I do believe you can only speakfrom experience. On trackman I was hitting my irons 2 degrees up and ½ inchlonger about 8 yards further that the standard spec.

This may not be make me any better, but shows a definite difference in my case between custom fit & off the shelf.

Since I got the cf irons my handicap has come down from15 to 10 in 3 years. However it’s difficult to separate this out from improvement in short game and better course management. I didn’t get any immediate improvement though. It took a few months to start scoring better.With that in mind I would be skeptical of any claims of immediate benefit.

I also (courtesy of GM) got custom fit for a putter, this I would recommend. My putting is now better, however again it wasn’t an instant improvement. It took me a while to get used to the different insert in the face.

i've found the definition of custom fitting varies wildly, but if done right is worth while. the main three experiences i've had are a big nationwide company who just give you several sets of irons to try then try to sell the one that fits best, one of the largest golf companies doing a custom fitting but trying to shoe horn me in to a standard set of irons which my coach had already said werent suitable. to fittings with my coach at a little club who's tried numerous shaft weights, stiffness, kick points, makes and models to find what suits best for my game now but will help me improve. result has been adding 30 yds to drives and 15 yds to each iron and improving accuracy.

so to summarise in my view, custom fitting- worthwhile as long as done correctly, and just because you go to a large dealer or maker doesnt necessarily mean you'll get the best fitting.
