I played Kings Acre in Edinburgh yesterday with a mate who`s just joined there . Being a new course to him I advised him to get a course yardage guide rather than buy an a gps app for his iphone as it would be illegal for medals.
anyway we noticed there was major differences between the coloured markings on the fairways and my skycaddie gps some holes were as much as 30 yds out . I did't have a yardage book for my course but it got me thinking so I bought one and plan to check when Im out next time but has anyone else checked their course guides against their gps devices ?

Kings Acre was simply miles out on my Skycaddie when I played it 18 months ago - the only course I have experienced problems, ever.

It's not measured correctly (or wasn't and sounds like it still isn't).

It's not representative!

Often a bit out, but can't recall seeing as much as 30 yards, normally in the 5-10 region which isn't really an issue for my game! :smirk:

ive seen before with the 150 posts at side of fairways being 5-10 out but I wouldn't expect marks on fairway to be so far out I told him to ask at the shop reception about it

I previously had a garmin and have never come across this before and just wondered with the yardage books

Kings acre is also my home course, also just joined this year. I have a Garmin and apart fom a couple of holes, which I understand have been changed recently I haven't really noticed it being way out. 5 yards either way doesn't matter to me. I think they have moved the tee back 35 yards at the 8th for example so that's out but it's a short hole with a huge green anyway so it matters a lot less.

Before I got the Garmin I used a couple of the iPhone apps with varying degrees of accuracy. For example, GolfCard GPS was way out on several holes.

I might ask around at the club and see what others think and see if its worth while emailing Garmin.

BTW if your mate fancies a round sometime with a high handicap newby at the same club get him to give me a shout. Off topic but what did you think of the nick of the course ?

I always get a yardage ook to go with my SC. Not only does it give me a souvenir of my visit but I get a better view on each hole rather than relying on the image on the GPS. Never really use the yardage chart distances once I play the hole and rely on my SC

This reminds me of a question which was bothering me previously in relation to how GPS yardages are obtained. My assumption is they are done from an ariel photo, but surely that doesn't take into account any slopes in the ground? (Hence why laser finders would be more accurate). Or am I missing something?

skycaddie walk the courses to get the yardages not sure about the others

if the holes were lengthened then it wouldnt effect the coloured slabs distance from the green.
I`ll take proper note next time im over playing. hes playing the medal on sat so he will prob be given a 28 handicap judging by the 1st 2 cards hes handed in

Hmmmmm. See what you mean. The slab in the middle of the 5th fairway is bang on. I know because I took a drop off it last week.

I haven't put any cards in yet. I was waiting for better weather and hopefully a better score, but I won't be a great deal lower than 28 myself to start with.

Great little club though.

I usually buy a yardage book at a new place as I just like to see a pic of the hole im playing, fixed markers I would not expect to be out that much but posts can easily be moved if it interferes with a swing, and after being moved a few times they can start to be 5 and 10 yards of a difference.

Always buy a planner to compliment a my Bushnell - you're snookered if you want a yardage to something you can't see otherwise!

150 yard markers at Aldersey are miles out in places I think they've got 1 right (12th) - quote from one member "Well they're 150 yards from somewhere!" he was captain at the time I generally give him a good write up!

Trust the GPS/Bushnell everytime!

I'd agree to an extent, was a member there for quite a few years but left a year back to become a golfing nomad.

the main problem with KA is drainage, several points spring to mind that are quite simply brutally drained.Suppose that's what you get for building on a farm.

I've always found the on course markers, especially the white sticks at the side, inaccurate! Greenstaff move them while cutting grass and they end up well out after a few seasons.

I meant the atmosphere rather than the condition of the course. It hasnt wintered very well and the greens are in shocking condition. It wont dry out until well into the summer by the way it looks just now and the way the weather is going these days.

On most of the courses I have played the 150 markers have been there or there abouts. But there is one hole on a course I play that makes me laugh as the yardage on the tee states something like 143 and the skycaddie always says around 110. And judging by the club I take the skycaddie is right, and I often wonder how many people play 8 irons that go miles over the back of the green.

Why illegal? - surely OK even on an iPhone if all non-compliant apps disabled - UNLESS Kings Acre is one of the enlightened and bans use of devices in club comps. Shouldn't be much of a discrepancy other than might result from pin position the datum on each hole for on-course distance measurements.
