Country Membership

It's not easy to maintain a 50mph average speed from your front door to destination when you don't live near a motorway.

There are a couple of courses around 27-34 miles from my house which would take me around 50-60 minutes, but I do agree that 25 miles is too short a distance for country membership. I have, however, heard of one or two doing it but I'm hoping rather than expecting.

Re: the Southport courses, Wallassey, Formby, etc. - they would likely take me around 70-85 mins, traffic dependent.

Were the Southport clubs asking a lot when you asked for country membership?

I enquired with st annes old links about a month back but the restrictions were ridiculous!

There were slightly different restrictions at each which I don't accurately recall as I didn't note them down given the cost was more than I could justify.

Costs were (I think):

Birkdale - didn't mention joining but I didn't ask + £995pa
Hillside - £1500 joining + £500pa
S&A - £1200 joining + £600pa

Birkdale required that 2 members vouched for you.

I can see why your looking elsewhere! Thats a lot if you include travelling & then the restrictions.

There is some good deals out there though i reckon, its just finding the right one :D

I've been looking into country membership.

Around here it's 40 miles (more often than not) and about 70% of the annual subs.

So, basically, it's not going to happen.

If I genuinely live more than 40 miles, I expect one game a month is my max. Not paying £450 for 5 games, unless I could get in somewhere more special than average.

I guess they don't really want these members around here, or they are misjudging the possibilities, or are concerned about abuse.

I think if anyone is considering country membership they need to work out how often they would play there. Once a month during the season and they would be mad to join. We have country members that play in every other comp and they are travelling 50-60 miles each way, some get value for money and I am sure that plenty don't . If the club has mega restrictions then is it a club worth joining?

Fish and Valentino (on here) are considering going for country membership at Wallasey, no playing restrictions, I think and can go in the comps.

I think the criteria was 100 miles plus though, from memory.

Wallasey criteria is 100 miles

I spoke with Hawkeye about this last week as I'm keen to join another club to give me some playing variety. As he rightly points out though, how often will you use it/be allowed to use it and so how viable when you add on travelling time on top does it become

Homer - Hindhead are doing second memberships (no distance restrictions) for around £600 so maybe worth a look if you do go ahead.

Not necessarily, have a look at Conwy which is probably 60 mins or so from M6/M6 junction, they do a very good second club membership.

I do like Conwy, but a 'second club' membership wouldn't work... I'd want country membership to be my primary and only club membership, which I believe certain clubs don't offer or allow.

It's also too far for me at 1hr 45mins, unfortunately.

Thanks though. :-)

That's the idea of country membership though, its massively subsidised as they wouldn't expect to see you every week, otherwise the general membership would be up in arms.

As Liverbirdie has stated, I have joined Wallasey as a country member as I am 100 miles away and it takes me less than 2hrs (average 90 minutes), it has little or very few restrictions against a full member so I will be playing in their midweek and weekend medals throughout the winter & Spring. It also has some good reciprocal courses I can play also which is also good to look into when looking at country membership as you may have some decent reciprocals closer but use the furthest course as your membership.

I think when I looked Conwy had Beau Desert as a reciprocal, that would be a win win in my eyes.

Mab as fishy says country membership isn't to allow you to get cheap membership close to home.

Its for playing once in a while, certainly not to be your home club, and prob not to play any comps though some do allow a few.

Mine is a bargin, but its a bargin as i prob would not play any more that once a month or somewhere to go when i can't play at my home clubs, if there is something on there.

I think you misunderstand my intentions chaps.

I'm not trying to get cheap membership and abuse the privileges. I play infrequently so can't justify £1000+ per annum membership, but I miss certain elements of club membership including maintaining a recognised (rather than Internet based) handicap, periodic competitions, etc.

i want to address those desires through country membership of a high quality club and course, and would expect to play perhaps 12 times a year (which I don't consider misuse of such a scheme). Wallasey would have been perfect for that (depending on cost) as it is around 1hr 15mins drive, and they'd be getting an annual country membership fee for only 12 games... win win for both of us was my thinking.

I do, however, understand why they apply 100 miles rather than 50...

not sure if that would work with some clubs, i know a couple up here where you are not allowed into comps, so i guess they would these would not let you put cards in for a handicap???

Yes, I think you're right. However, Birkdale was the first place I called out of interest and you can both maintain a handicap and play in comps there, which got me thinking as I didn't realise ANY clubs offered that on country membership.

Where about in Cheshire are you to be 1 hr 45 mins away?

Also check out the "reciprocals" that Conwy have, although not free:-
