Morning all,

I'm a 28 golf addict (in the last year) looking for my first home.

My only problem is that I'm currently based in Woking (West Byfleet side) and I seem to be *surrounded* by some of the most elite courses in the country, or some extremely busy courses.

My budget is circa £1k MAX. Also seems to be very hard to find anything in this range..

I've seen a few potential gems such as Chobham (have heard potentially wet over winter?) and Pyrford but wondered if anyone had some tips/pointers? Ideally no more than 20 min drive so I can maximise play and retain my relationship haha.

Thank you!

Pyrford is not for high handicappers unless you like losing half-a-dozen balls a round. When I was Captain there in 2020, there were very few players over 20 handicap playing there. Chobham would be a lot better and have always been welcoming to new members.

Thanks for the reply; Would you say they are the only two options? Any other gems that are worth exploring?

My handicap is currently 8.7 so not overly worried about losing too many balls!

You will struggle finding a full membership for £1k a year in the Woking/Surrey area.

Might be worthing looking at a points based/flexi membership

Ah sorry when you wrote 28 golf addict, I assumed that was your handicap! Pyrford is excellent for low-mid handicaps - they have an excellent roll-up and competition set up for a course that does welcome a lot of visitors. Message me directly if you want any more info.

At this budget I think your only option is going to be pay and play. Or move to a different part of the country.

Could Pine Ridge be an option?

I played Pine Ridge on Sunday, and a chap from Woking joined us as it was the best option for him - he said he's looked at Burhill but that was £5k joining fee.

Pine ridge only offer 4 and 5 day memberships. Think they make too much money on the weekends to worry about having 7 day members

  • 4 Day Adult Membership (£1,344)
  • 5 Day Adult Membership (£1,728)

we often play at Milford Golf Club, as it is owned by Crown so we can play there for free.

played last sunday and in very good condition, some interesting holes and it looked like the clubhouse was busy.

Not sure what the membership charges are, but would be worth a look.

How does it play after the changes that were made a couple of years ago?

I left Woking nearly 40 years ago and membership fees were over £500p.a. back then. At least there were quite a few pay and play courses then.
If you want to keep your handicap meantime you could sign up with EG I golf (£46 pa)

Maybe worth looking at Onegolfclub membership? Good few courses in Surrey and Kent for starters, including Chobham AND Pyrford.
Friends of mine joined it and have found it great for them (albeit they are shift workers, so don't need weekend rounds all the time). It's maybe £1000 or so for the year, and they use igolf for handicaps.

Play more golf may also be a good option. The three clubs near me had very few restrictions and would have allowed me to play approx 20 peak time weekend rounds for under £800, perfect for fair weather golfers. Off peak weekday rounds would have offered almost 100 games. Always the option to top up too.

The one I was an ex member at had the below differences to a full member

* one week advanced booking verses two weeks for full members. You could however be added to a booking by a full member earlier when they were booking.
* you could not play in club champs or presidents cup.

You could also play inter club matches etc.

Hi there, what did you go for in the end? I live in Byfleet, looking to join somewhere too for a 5 day/flexi membership in a similar budget. Also trying to decide if I should do Flexi at pyrford, weekday membership at chobham or hoebridge.
