When I used to play squash, rather than just playing bog-standard practice matches with mates, or doing drills, we would play 'condition games' which combine the two. So we would play a normal game but (say) one of us would not be able to play a drop, or would only be able to lob from the front of the court etc etc. It was a good competitive way of drilling without the mindless repetition.

I was playing a few holes the other night with a couple of lads the other evening and to keep things interesting we introduced the condition that all putts that came up short incurred a 50p penalty. It was quite illuminating how quickly we improved our distance control (tightwads).

I have also heard of playing a condition game where you get a shot back for going in a bunker, so that a sandy par becomes a bird. It introduces some interesting strategy into a 9 hole matchplay as you need to be confident of both your ability to accurately get into the sand and then accomplished getting out.

Any others ?

You could play the putting snake

Every time someone three putts you add 50p on to the snake and the person who last three putted holds the snake - at the end of the game the person still holding the snake has to pay out the amount to the others.

How about you have to nominate which club you'll use for your next shot before you hit the current one. Encourages creative shot-making with the 'wrong' club.

I like be the idea of these games but would be pretty LOLZ for a high handicapper for me as usually my planned next shot is very different from the actual

Genius. might have a go at that next time I am out for a holes myself.

I like the idea of that - certainly very creative

We encourage sandy pars also - 20p per sandy par - 10p for single putts.

Also works with Camels (sand) and Monkeys (hitting trees)! There's probably Fish for water, but I haven't played it for so long I can't remember. I do remember i had a to 2 put from 25 feet in the dark to avoid being the holder of the snake though!

Go one better, let your op nominate your next club to be used and manufacture your tee shot to suit your nominated 2nd shot.

Golf is hard enough without me having to invent games to make even more so

The point of these games is that by taking you slightly outside of your comfort zone, they make you improve in a competitive environment which is more 'real' than a range or practice area.

A lot of sports do this - athletics and cycling do repetitions which are 'harder' than the actual event to build up staminia; football plays 'one touch' or 'man down' to increase the intensity or change thought processes.

Just doing the same stuff over and over sometimes gets a bit stale.

I do like the 'next club' idea. The putting snake less so, as it seems to punish general incompetence rather than try and enhance any particular skill/thought process. Maybe that's just a reflection of my putting tho...

when I play with my dad there is usually a side match. £2 each for front, back and overall. Then 50p birdies, 50p sand saves and 50p ooslers (Nearest on a par 3 getting down for par).

Played snake, camel, duck on my stag. a three putt , and bunker or a water hazard all meant that you had to take a shot that evening. We went easy and got little premade shots of about 20%. Just as well because I had 6 and a friend had 10 lined up!!!!

I like to play putter punishment for any putts that come up short or go past the safe zone. The safe zone is 1 putter length arc past the hole. Anything outside of this area is moved back one putter length past the hole. Practices distance control and 4-6 footers. Good on the practice green and the course. (Edit: obviously for those quiet evening games with no one behind)
