Conceding putts in match play.

I thought he was asking if his ball was on my line and required marking.
He was asking for a gimmee.

I always automatically mark my ball and then ask if my marker is OK, if the ball comes to rest and then someone asks "is that OK", it would be obvious to me he's asking for a gimmie!

If the hole had been bigger he would have holed the putt and you would have lost the match.
Swings and roundabouts

Actually he missed his putt so badly that I doubt if it would have gone into an 8" hole! Head up jerky spasm because he was furious that I had asked him to hole out! Good job it wasn't the Solheim Cup because I would now be a hate figure like poor Suzann Pettersen!

A word of warning.

I was once playing against a fast improving high handicapper.
Giving about a shot a hole I knew I had to be at my best to win.
On the first hole he putts 4 foot short and nearly on my line.
'Is that OK' he asks.
'Its fine' says I.
So he walks forward and picks up his ball.:o

I let it go [but won the match quite well]

A good warning that concessions should be made clearly on the one hand and not assumed on the basis of unclear statements. I would tend to accept in this case that Doon frae Troon’s opponent had enough reason to think the putt was being conceded to be allowed to replace his ball without penalty and putt out. To gimme or not to gimme? That is the question. The answer is in the circumstances and all part of the fun of matchplay. Sometimes I will - and sometimes I won't. I let my opponent do the guessing until I do - or don't. There's no should or shouldn't about it.

That was what was interesting about that match [mentioned in the earlier post]

I almost started feeling sorry for the guy.
He was expecting me to concede 4 foot putts and I would give him an occasional one but he ended up a nervous wreck and missed many short putts:lol:

I don't think I have ever been given, and certainly I have never conceded to my opponent, a 4 foot putt and I certainly wouldn't be asking "is that OK"? In fact, I only ever do that if it's so obvious a gimme that it would always be conceded......some opponents just don't get that they still have to concede it even if it's obvious and seem surprised when you ask!

I'm was given a 3-4 footer in a match on Saturday, I was a bit surprised.

4bbb match play. Partner has a 10footer, I have a 12 footer both for par, and the hole. Opponents are in in bogey. Mine is a downhill curly one, his is uphill and pretty straight. I go first and it shaves the hole, missing on the high side, ends up between 3 and 4 foot under the hole, straight putt coming back.
I'm about to ask my partner if he wants me to knock it in to secure the half before he attempts his putt, and they gave it to me! Very generous I thought. My partner, who is a superb putter, promptly knocked in his 10 footer for the hole and a 3up lead that we never relinquished and ended up victorious 4&3.
Good enjoyable match, played in excellent spirit, opponents were top blokes.

I could be that your opponents were pre-empting your showing your partner the line. If you had continued, your partner would have been DQd for the hole.

After reading this thread, it has become immediately apparent that there are people who put waaaaay to much thought about conceding a putt!! Slightly more important things to worry about in life!

Not when I am playing a match that is important to me - at these times my worries, fears and concerns of life are of little import - winning or not losing the hole becomes all :)

I understand where you are coming from. You shouldn't ask for a putt to be given, you should wait to be told. Even then who asks for a four foot putt to be given, apart from me when playing Pokerjoke to annoy him.;)

I can honestly say that the best feeling in golf, (even better than the feeling you get when you cream one straight down the middle), is the feeling you get when you leave your first putt far enough away from the hole to immediately think "Jesus I don't fancy the next one" and your playing partner says "that's good".
The only times I've had that feeling off the golf course produced two kids.....
