Conceding putts in match play.

Gimmes have always been part of matchplay. They speed up play and reduce damage to the green around the hole, so shouldn't be discouraged. The important thing is not to get angry and to take your time if you are asked to hole a tidier. If you decide to concede an opponent's putt it is best to pick his ball up and throw or knock it back to him, so he doesn't get a chance to take a practice putt. A concession once made cannot be declined or withdrawn (rule 2-4). :)

Del, unfortunately for your cunning ploy, if you knocked your opponent’s ball away to indicate a concession, I would allow him to put it back and putt it out if he chose to. See Rule 7-2 for two reasons for this.

Yes you are allowed to practice chipping and putting on or around the last green played unless this would unduly delay play or there is a CoC prohibiting this.

Continuing putting after a hole is finished is not regarded as illegal practice? However, how many opponents in matchplay know the rules that well?
Surely that is not the point. If a player doesn't know the rules the he suffers when playing with someone that does.

If you did that to me and I thought the putt was worthy of my attention, I'd put it back down and have a practice putt anyway.

Although you call it a practice putt, it is not in fact practice. It is a legitimate stroke.

Legitimate in that I am allowed to do it, practice in that it has already been conceeded so the result doesn't matter. I should add, I would wait until the hole was over before having a go at it.

I'm quite generous - happy to give most putts within a putter handle

Never a game serious enough to make them putt out everything
Me too. Also I like to get on with it, and faffing about over a 12 inch putt would just annoy me more than anything. Let's try and play quicker not slower. Mind you if it was from a foot on the last at my Club to win the match I would make the opponent putt.;)

If someone wants to act daft asking to see little tap ins.....I knock it in and then take a few steps back and have an exaggerated look at the line again. Then as you're coming to put the flag back in, just say to you sarcastically "must have been some break in that putt that I couldn't see".

I'll also give you putts which may be further away then my marker which you still want me to putt.

Pick it up and move on ffs

I have at times before starting s match said "no gimmies", you can see the knees buckle and beads of sweat rolling immediately 😂😂
I have never been given a gimmie in competition matchplay that I thought I would miss. In my head I will hole every short putt, so no beads from me. I might make sure I trample all round the hole when I mark my ball from three inches from the hole on your line though.

If it was above the hole and they had 2 putts from 12" I'd make them putt, chances are the 2nd putt would be from 4ft :D

I was once 3 down with 3 to play in a club knockout singles match. At the 16th hole I got my par 4 (par putt about 6 inches and conceded) and my opponent who had been closer than me on the green then had two putts for the match. His approach putt only just missed the hole and went about 18 inches past. He obviously expected me to concede the putt for the half and the match, but I saw it was downhill and a bit curly so I made him take it. He missed and was so angry with either himself or me that his game completely fell apart. I won the match at the 1st extra hole. Greatest escape ever! :)

If the hole had been bigger he would have holed the putt and you would have lost the match.
Swings and roundabouts

A word of warning.

I was once playing against a fast improving high handicapper.
Giving about a shot a hole I knew I had to be at my best to win.
On the first hole he putts 4 foot short and nearly on my line.
'Is that OK' he asks.
'Its fine' says I.
So he walks forward and picks up his ball.:o

I let it go [but won the match quite well]

I don't get this, are you just admitting to being a numpty in giving a 4ft putt away or am I missing something :mmm:

In confused ? What is the warning ?

I thought he was asking if his ball was on my line and required marking.
He was asking for a gimmee.

From his words it's pretty clear what he was asking for

If it was about his marker surely he would have asked if it was ok to mark behind etc

What was it about the bold bit that wasn't obvious to Fish and Phil - at least after checking!
