I had clubs fitted three years ago after playing with standard loft and length clubs for 10 years previous. Have just gone back to standard and if anything they feel better. I was never happy with half an inch extra length on shafts and think that made them more difficult to swing.

Am very happy with standard clubs and won,t get fitted again. It may make a difference to single figure handicappers but to me i think mid handicapps won,t be helped. Of course it may all be in the head - like everything else in this game??

Did you feel comfortable with the extra 1/2 inch during your custom fitting? I recently had a custom fit and due to my stats (6"1 tall) I was advised to go for 1/2 inch but I said straight away I didnt feel comfortable, so was never considered. I did however end up with 2degrees upright, which felt great.

Postures and swings change though matey, did you get your existing irons amended?

Why does having them half an inch longer not feel right? After all the 8 iron is a half inch longer than the wedge etc, and so on through the set. Is it in your head or is it a genuine thing with longer clubs...?

I played standard length clubs for 10 years and always had a problem with hitting the ball out of the toe. I was fitted last year at Mizuno with the shafts 1/2 inch longer and it has cured the fault.
It took some time getting used to the clubs but I can honestly say my ball striking has really improved, and I'm pretty sure Its down to the extra length
I was a little unsure when the fitter recommended it, thinking extra length = harder to hit, but in fact they're easier, and i'm getting at least 10 yards extra with each club

I have had standard length, and plus 1/2 inch. Also messed about with loft and lie. Made no difference at all. If I can hit a pitching wedge, then I can hit a 9 iron. If the pw has a shaft like a 9i, I can still hit it. Can't see a problem.
Til I get to the 4 iron, which can be stupid long.
A bit like a 3i, which I don't want to carry, as it is useless.

C/f, I'm out too.

Have been C/F'd and bought off the shelf. Come to the conclusion that there is so much going on in my swing that even on a day when the timing and foilbles all hang together I'm not going to benefit greatly. I have been measured numerous times and I am a regular in most stock shafts fitted. The R11's I've tested have been standard KBS 90 and I've no issue with them so I don't see what I'd benefit from with another C/F session

Played standard shafts always but decided to get custom fit for my first "expensive" set.

Ended up with 1/2 inch longer shafts but the 2 degrees upright made all the difference to me being 6'3.

I have my clubs tweaked on a yearly basis normally when i have new grips fitted for the new season, get the pro to put face marker tape on and watch me hit a few just to make sure everything is ok,also helps me if he sees me getting into bad habits, don't forget as we get older our swings change and your set up mite not suit your game now.

Guy I play with just had all his clubs fitted at Precision Golf Egham, think he spent about 3 and a half grand. He plays loads better with his irons, he also bought new fitted Cleveland 3 and 5 woods, wouldnt have been my choice, but he hits them great and then there's the Driver. He paid 399 for an R11 head and 350 for an Oban shaft, both fitted for his swing etc, can he hit his Driver, NOPE makes me chuckle though

I got custom fitted for new irons after 14 years with off the shelf regular shafted jobs, lost distance, feel, confidence and gave them back at a serious financial loss, my fault as I agreed to buy based on the 'expert' advice but sometimes the fitters go on the stats only and feel/comfort/confidence in a head/shaft combo is ignored.
A good thorough detailed CS with a fitter who listens and has empathy I believe WILL pay dividends but 60 mins trying a few combinations on a range is as hit and miss as plucking a set off the shelf IMO;)

I didnt win the Titleist fitting:( so will go through a more detailed process next time.

Getting fitted is a bit like going to a Consultant for a medical appointment. A lot depends on how well you know what ails you, what you want, how truthful you are, and what the examination on the day shows.

Clearly, golfers swings change from day to day, if not swing to swing. But they can still be characterised. You are unlikely to have one driver swing which has 90mph speed and a smooth release, then the next at 110mph with a fast release. The fitter can look at averages, best, worst, variability, and combined with an understanding of your swing, determine something that will help whatever issues you have. If you hook some shots but are not worried if the new fitting will make you fade some, that may lead to a different result from a player who hooks, but wants to keep a draw shape.

I am rather amazed (if not incredulous) that adding 1/2" to the shafts would cause the OP such a problem. I am sure there were other factors at play. Also you should know that the word 'standard' is meaningless because two 'standard' sets sitting on the racks at AG beside one another can be different from one another in terms of length, lie, shaft design, weight and flex and grip size.

It seems to counter common sense that a set of clubs which better suit your swing won't allow you to play better. They won't play better for you on their own, though.

Fitting is all about averages and consistency yes... I was lucky enough that when fitted for new shafts recently the numbers were very consistent.

swingspeed all within 2 mph of each other... and all no more than 1 'point' difference in toe down, release, smash factor and all that other nice to look at info.

Launch angles and spin rates were pretty good too. Noe to be able to line up where the bloody thing needs to go instead of aiming 40 yards right and I'll be fine.

actually I've just remembered that when I wasnt happy about the clubs I was fitted for and bought, I went back and took my very old set, they crunched the numbers using the old tired set and the new hi tech set and the numbers and dispersion was the same:eek:

so where did that leave me..................somewhere with a paddle and a gum tree:angry:
