Club dilemma

a 5 wood.....which will leave me 20 yards if I'm lucky and 220 if I'm unlucky.....

Hehe.. :D

I think the 3 wood is a more versatile club otherwise you're going to be stuck with a choice of driver off the deck or laying up for anything over 220.

3 wood will cover you from 220-260 and add more options from off the tee. Provided you can hit it of course :p

Do you carry a 3-iron?

Anyway, it now transpires I have lost all confidence with my 3w, which used to be a club i could hit fairly well, but I tried using it 3 times tonight, i topped it twice and sliced it the 3rd time.

Sounds like you need to practice your 3 ball drill (or whatever it was) with your 3-wood :D

This is my quandary too.
I am thinking of dithing the 3w for a 50 degree wedge. I don't use the 3w much, and normally lay up with my hybrid if I have more than 200 to go, as it is reliable. I carry a 5w, but don't use that much either. On most par 5s, I play them as par 5s, and on long par 4s, often a 5 is an ok score.

Yup, I carry a 3I & my hybrid is 20* which is meant to replace the 3I but I get two completely different shots off both clubs.

With the 3I i get a low ball flight and a lot of roll, with the hybrid I can get that up high and it lands soft.

I'm deffo ditching the 3W anyway, i'm possibly going to get rid of my 60* raw haze which I sometimes struggle with and buy a matching pair of 52* & 60* wedges.
