Clothing Etiquette

do you wear an old school flap cap instead of a baseball cap then? they aren't particularly classy regardless of what brand/logo you have on and most pubs will make you take a cap off even if it is a galvin you paid 35quid for

No I wear a visor, and yes I know how much jeans cost, I have a clothes shop, and we have had jeans that retail at £250, but I still would not accept that they are ok on the golf course buy some pants or don't bother.

People always go one about making the game more accessible to people, what a load of rubbish, who are the people watching from the wings, going if only they would let me wear my footy shirt and jeans i'd start playing that game. It is part of the equipment if you think your to good to wear pants, sod off and play football.

I'd just like to comment on the mention of smart clothing putting off youngsters.

I don't think they dislike dressing up for golf, in fact most of the juniors you see on the course look a damn site smarter than the oldies with their 25 year old Pingle V neck covered in holes & stains you dare not think how they got there.

The youngsters seem to go for the more trendy, fashionable, purpose made golf attire.

May I also say that, personally, I'm a fan of the turtle neck, as work by Tiger. Wearing my black one makes me feel like Gary Player, especially when I'm in a bunker.

I Rarely wear jeans these days. And I'm not about to start wearing jeans & certainly not on the golf course.

On one hand I see no reason whay people shouldn't be allowed to wear jeans, but come on, when else can we really make an effort to look smart. The golf course is a perfect example of a time to dress up in your best garb, instead of your gardening DIY & pub wear.

I wonder if folk who object to dress codes do the same when they play other sports?

How daft does it sound?

eg "Football boots are expensive (therefore snobby!) so I am going to play in street shoes!"

My team play in red, but cos I am an individual, I am going to play in blue!

I have just finished work, I can't be bothered to bring a sports bag, so I'm playing 5-a-side in my suit and tie!

I dont think I have read an objection against dress codes :D, all I have read is peoples opinions on what dress forms should or should not be acceptable to that individual playing golf, and as many golf clubs seem to have differing levels of acceptance, this suggests no one really has an answer to it.

The Army has probably one of the strictest dress rules you could come across, yet how many squaddies do you see, when off duty, wearing a collar and tie, or a uniform of some kind, in resturants, pubs, clubs, even at public events where they prefer to be seen in a certain way? No, its 'T' shirt and jeans mostly, perhaps because they have to wear uniform all the time, in the same way most golfers dont have to wear a uniform ever, but maybe seek the uniformity and sense of belonging ;)they have missed in other ways, like golf.

The only thing I dont like about this thread, are the comments which suggest or hint that someone who might wear jeans to golf is a lesser person than those who dont.
I would suggest its probably the oposite ;).

As far as sounding daft goes, look no further than your own post analogy.

My club is regarded as a "working man's club" but we still have our dress code rule, smart, but casual, jeans, tee shirt, trainers on the course......er no thanks, jeans, tee shirt, trainers in the clubhouse, should be shot on sight. ;) ;) :p

Dont get me started on this again!!!

I played today and although it was boiling hot I had still had my proper attire on and looked the part.

However, I lost count of the amount of chavs walking around the course with camo shorts, jeans, vest tops, football shirts and even 2 or 3 who had no tops on at all.

It makes me friggin pig sick it does, chav scum

I totally agree with you and freddielong. My club has a similar dress code, no (blue denim)jeans, no trainers, no t`shirts and only tailored shorts. We have a lot of juniors who are brought up from the day they join to respect the dress code and the rules of the club.

We will have to agree to disagree as I don't think I have ever seen someone with shorts and shoes on and thought they look smart.

Brian Barnes !

Tailored shorts and long socks ftw. The lady members would swoon when I passed.

Ok, maybe not. But they were golfing attire, and I looked like a golfer wearing them. And comfortable and breezy on a hot summers day. Plenty of ventilation in all those important little places.

In answer to whoever said what's wrong with jeans. ( HNJ ? )

Nothing.

In the right environment. But a golf course, historically, isn't the right environment.

But asking the question in return.

What's so tough about wearing slacks/chinos/trousers ?

You can buy a pair for less than the cost of smart jeans. You are fitting in with rules that have been around for decades, and so don't run the risk of lowering standards. They can be lighter to wear, and therefore more practical during hot periods. They don't chafe.

The only reason for wanting to wear jeans rather than trousers, that I can see, is an emotional one. Wanting to rebel against the old fogey image. To change golfing society. To MODERNISE !!

But most of us play golf to get a few hours away from the stresses of modern society.

Let's protect that sanctity. Any lowering of standards, no matter how slight, is always the beginning of a slippery slope.

We had the conversation here recently about the lowering of standards about swearing in society making it trickier to know where to draw the line with language on the forum.

Allowing jeans will do exactly the same with standards of dress on the course. And once that slight lowering of standards has been made, it is just a matter of time before any jeans will be accepted, and other dress restrictions will be changed. The slovenlyness which WILL follow will not be for the betterment of the game.

IM ( very :)

Seeing the various curtains and bedspreads that John Daly and Ian Poulter play in for trousers -it makes any dress code a piss take. :p

I am against jeans anywhere near a course or club house. My club has brought back allowing jeans into the club house. (for a trial period). I wont be wearing jeans. IMO if you cant make the effort to dress for your chosen sport then forget about it. Would you turn up to play for the local cricket team in jeans? Would you go to your local tennis club to play wearing jeans? NO. Forget about jeans, if someone wants to wear jeans let thme wear them elsewhere. I'm defo no snob but keep jeans out.
I think I'll ring Mr Brown and tell him it's all his fault, after all we blame them for everything else.
