Clothing Etiquette

What has what you wear got to do with anyone but yourself. These old fashioned rules are a menace. I can well remember a club pro giving a junior an unnecessary talking to for wearing a T-shirt. Knowing where he lives this was probably his Sunday best. Lets get rid of these snob driven "rules".

Sorry. But football supporters wear a 'uniform' when they go and watch a match. Skate-boarders wear a 'uniform' when they go to the skate park. PVC fetishists wear a 'uniform.....you get my drift.

Wearing smart clothes for golf is no different.

Jeans are impractical anyway. They're heavy, retain moisture, stay wet when they get wet and badly chafe when they are wet. There are so much better materials around now-a-days for sports wear.

With regards to us 'snobs'. I can kit myself out in some smart practical clothes for golf, for less than the price of a premiership football shirt!!

Casual beer in the clubhouse post golf, relaxed attire is good. Formal dinners. It's got to start out as jacket and tie.

I'd hate to see nasty nylon football shirts in the clubhouse for whatever reason.

So for me. It's not anything goes.

And TBH. I don't care if anyone thinks I'm a snob. I've put up with that attitude from poorly educated peer pressured individuals since I was sailing at school. They too thought I was a snob for sailing. Yet all my kit cost less than their football kit and season tickets. Go figure.

Sorry, but trousers and a collared shirt are not 'snobby' rules. It is reasonable golf attire. Go to any muni at a weekend and tell me that what you see is acceptable?

I do agree with getting rid of the ridiculous jacket and tie nonsense though, what is good enough for the course should be good enough for the clubhouse.

On a related point, I got collared (no pun intended) by the President yesterday, as I was apparently wearing 'cargo' shorts, which we ban. Now my problem is that I don't think they are cargo shorts, they do have cargo style pockets on the side though, but only on the side, and no ties at the hems like cargo shorts normally do. My 16 year old daughter also says they are not cargo shorts, and I would take the word of a 16 year old over a 60 year old when it comes to fashion!

Anyway I didn't argue the point, but was mightily pissed off today to see the second group of the morning in the club comp, with one guy teeing off with cargo shorts, at least more cargo than mine were, I still wouldn't class them as cargo, but hey ho. :(

Thats is the problem that will happen with jeans. What one person perceives to be the wrong style will look fine in anothers eyes. At least with golf shirt and trousers there is no amibguity
Any short rule I've ever seen has always been 'tailored' shorts. No idea why we've gone specifically against 'cargo' as it's a new club for me.

Right, there is no such thing as a smart pair of jeans. Jeans are jeans, casual at best smart, no.
Jacket and tie, no thanks.
Can't see why the 'jeans' brigade can't wear a pair of Dockers and conform. Not asking alot really.
Cargo shorts = any shorts with stitched on pockets = no.
Jeans = trousers with stitched on pockets = no.

My club has started to accept 'jeans style' trousers, but not jeans. WTF. How complicated is that?

Lets face it guys we have a split here. Is their a happy medium, not really, I would not join a club who thought it was OK to wear Jeans, though I must admit I am not a snob, infact far from one. I would not pay £XXXX subs if this was the case.
As mentioned, Local ruling for Clubs fine, not my problem, though will say NO to no shirt whilst playing Golf, just out and out Chav Street for me.

Its all about Education, you are saying the snobbiness of the game is killing it for the youth, well we need to get the message out there, we are not all snobby, making them wear a pair of £15 M&S chino trousers is not snobby, just looking the part, that is all.

EDUCATION!!!!

I dont really understand the offense jeans give people, they are an item of clothing that has been around longer than most single forms of general attire. I also dont see how anyone can feel all jeans are un-smart :D. I have worn jeans at Woodhall for example, simply because they do not appear as jeans to the obsrever, I have worn them at a number of clubs without complaint, they are the best to wear in winter by far.

Its not that I am a rebel of any kind, in fact most of the time I wear slacks or trousers and will hapilly don a jacket and tie for functions, dinners etc, the real problem here is a combination of judgements and to some degree snobbery and to a lesser degree the inability of to judge what is or isnt smart, no doubt one reason why such dress codes took off in the first place. The golfers of yesteryear would consider golfers of today to be improperly dressed or even an eyesore, modern golf clothing is a range that includes trousers that look like jeans ironically, pants that look like a carnival has started on the course and some kit that just looks daft, yet because its worn by the tour pro's it is suddenly smart, modern, trendy or seen as the latest golf fashion :D.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it certainly applies to golfers. Yet the funniest thing about dress on a golf course, is when its bad weather, most golfers look like a bag of ? tied loosely but can never see it themselves :D

Jeans on the course during a hot summer ??

Do you guys not suffer chafing around the *cough* upper thigh areas ?

Wanting to protect my jewels, I've always thought there was a practical and smart reasoning behind the rule.

If someone can afford several hundred pounds for membership of a club, they can afford a pair of Farahs, for goodness sake.

On a public muni course, I think it's different, though - these are the courses where beginners get the bug, so dress codes should be more relaxed. But only to some extent. Playing without a shirt at all is totally unacceptable imo. Naked sweaty pits in public is offensive to me.

NO WAY to jeans on the course as far as I am concerned, its the start of a slippery slope imo.

My Club has a relaxed attitude in the Clubhouse, ie you can have a beer in exactly what you have played in etc, but Dining Room after 6pm and its Jacket & Tie required.

I wonder if folk who object to dress codes do the same when they play other sports?

How daft does it sound?

eg "Football boots are expensive (therefore snobby!) so I am going to play in street shoes!"

My team play in red, but cos I am an individual, I am going to play in blue!

I have just finished work, I can't be bothered to bring a sports bag, so I'm playing 5-a-side in my suit and tie!

no I would never wear jeans on a hot day. I merely mentioned I have in the past (although no longer do as I enjoy the smart dress aspect of the game)

however at certain courses it doesn't bother me. As mentioned I have never been part of a club due to never having been in a position to afford it until now however now that I am looking to join one I don't want it to be anything like the courses I grew up playing where I mentioned people playing without shirts etc and bins full of cans of carling

Yes, but it wasn't that which was a giveaway. It was the fact that you actually got your butler to do your sailing for you, while you went of to the polo chukkas with your girlie pal, Veronica Windsor-Poshbit from Rodean.

:D

Absolutly no jeans I would refuse to play with my playing partner if he turned up in jeans or shorts.

Golf is Golf because of its history and stuffy traditions and long may it continue to be that way as Tiger Woods himself said
"Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a sport for white men dressed like black pimps"

Jeans are for the pub shorts are for football trousers are for golf end of story.

Very good!

(Why aren't the smilies working?)

Well you can't justify it on tradition, because we would all be wearing jackets and ties on the course, and you can't use Tiger for any justification, because he's the clown that has started this t-shirt trend, that thankfully most clubs still ban.

But i have to ask, what is wrong with shorts, as I will wear shorts virtually throughout the summer?

Basically Golfers should look like golfers - Its not a lot to ask & I think you might find that Tony Jacklin was wearing the rubbish mock polos shirts in the late 60's early 70's cant blame Tiger for that.

Shorts are for sports were you run around, they never look right with golf shoes any one who tells you they look good are lying to spare your feelings.
When you go home put your shorts and golf shoes on, find a full lentgh mirror and have a look.

Now go and buy some pants and keep your shorts for the beach.

Knee lenght shorts (biege/stone has to be) with brown/white saddles look very smart.

However navy or black shorts, and any sort of coloured sock, but especially the old foggies friend - black, and pale milk bottle legs, a total no-no and I'd agree with you.
