But do you believe that us mere mortals can do anything to stop this happening?

Theoretically, we could, in reality, no, we'll never organise ourselves to the extent required.

Unless of course someone can figure out how to make money out of it, then it'll happen practically overnight...

Now, you'll note that at no point have I said that I think we're responsible for it, that point is still to be proven, however it's also beyond question that our output of greenhouse gases has increased rapidly during the same period. Now you can choose to think that's a coincidence if you wish or they could be linked.

They may or may not be linked be linked, but even if they are correlation and causality are not the same thing.

True but it's we know it's us putting the greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, so if there isn't a causal link it's a pretty big coincidence.

Climate is not the same as weather.

Big snowfalls will happen, just less often. This sort of snow was much more common when I was a kid, and is actually not too bad now, and we should be able to easily cope.

Seems to be happening more often from where I'm sitting.

Think I'll start a new thread in the Lounge about the best 'pies' people have had!!! For the record though, a 'pie floater' I had in Adelaide way back in 1997 was pretty special!! :D :D

So far there is clearly only one person commenting here who has any idea what they're talking about, LHC I agree with just about all that you have said. You're absolutely right that we probably won't collectively do anything about it unless money is brought into the equation. The only hope I suppose is that the 'paradigm shift' that is clearly underway within the scientific community at present, is reflected within the opinions of 'Joe Public'. The chances of this though aren't looking great judging by the level of ignorance of some on here.
The bottom line is if we don't do something about it immediately we WILL be extinct within next few centuries. I have heard from various sources that our 'point of no return' based on current rates of warming is around 2040.
Happy days.

Who me? Twice in one lifetime? etc etc...

Trouble is most people get all their information from the news papers and they think they'll sell more copies with denial headlines. Couple that with a general public suspicion of science (see "frankenstein foods and the recent outcry regarding cloned meat) and it doesn't take much for people to believe anything but the facts.

The bottom line is if we don't do something about it immediately we WILL be extinct within next few centuries.

Hmmm, society might change drastically but something will survive, unless of course the fight for habitable areas turns to conflict. Of course a massive reduction in population might be exactly the counter-balance required.

One way or another life will continue. It might not be us but it'll carry on without us.

Nah, not really. The piss-poor level of preparedness is not helping and 24 hour TV gets everyone very exercised by it all. A small amount of clustering of snowy years gives the impression it is getting worse. There were a few years not so long ago when I didn't see a snowflake.

Err, yes, before last year I can't remember any significant snowfall for about 20 years, if not longer, so twice in less than 12 months would seem to suggest it's now happening more than it was, at least compared to the last quarter of last century.

That is a statistical anomaly, known as 'clustering'. Climate does not change in 2 years. The overall pattern of climate change is normally measured in eons, but humans appear to have accelerated the process.

I'll start worrying when the snow hasn't cleared by September.

I just don't know if anyone knows what they're talking about. When climate change was first being discussed, it was about how the world was cooling and we were heading for an ice age, it's only in the last 20 years that they started talking about global warming. Then.........

Sooner we can get back on the golf course the better.....
