"Con te partiro" - Bocelli and Brightman. Play it on my iPod all the time.

Never liked Sarah Brightman but by christ she has a good voice.
Play that track on a decent system and it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Not many tracks do that but Paul Potts singing Nessun Dorma on Britains got talent did. Totally unexpected from seeing him before he strated singing. My Dad (god rest his soul) used to love opera and one of his favourites was Mario Lanza

Good taste your Dad Vig.

Mario Lanza was also one of the few singers who could sing
Opera, but also make the transition to singing songs that were popular at the time.Something,I think, todays Italian Tenors have difficulty with, due,in part,to their lack of good English. But then lets face it,they have better English than I have Italian.

I am correct in thinking that it was used in the film Platoon to quite good effect?

Yes......but endlessly......

The intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana is a wonderful piece. As is Barber's Adagio.

It would be tricky for me to come up with "just a few" pieces, but if I was desert island disc-ing and had to only include classical, I guess I'd mix this lot up and draw them out lottery style.

Rachmaninov - 2nd piano concerto
Tchaikovsky - "pathetique" symphony
Stravinsky - the rite of spring
Brahms - violin concerto
Mozart - requiem or Faure requiem
Barber - adagio
Rimsky-Korsakov - sheherazade
Michael Legrand - Theme from "Umbrellas of Cherbourg"
John Williams - Theme from "Schindler's list"
BOTH played by Itzhak Perlman
Elgar - cello concerto
Tchaikovsky - romeo and juliet overture.

No Beethoven, or Bach....or even Dvorak's b***** new world.

Played the lot.....

Tchaikovsky's ''Waltz of the flowers'' takes some beating. Nobody has mentioned Sibelius. This could go on forever.

My current favourite is "Le Onde" by Ludovico Einaudi.

Also as a bit of a film buff I absolutely love John Barry and John Williams!

John Barry.....he's marvellous. I once took a lesson from a pro that spent 95% of the time asking me about recording some film scores. I just wanted to golf!!!
