See our system just works

Either tell each other what to buy or just buy and give to the other one to wrap

I know I got 2 tops , 2 caps and a belt coming from her and the kids

Opened card from my nan yesterday, she puts money in..thanks nan new cushions will be bought

Parents will do same

Focus the surprises on the kids
Whenever me, my wife or kids opened a card from my mother we spent 20mins hoovering up glitter off the floor.

We do something similar. Set a budget for each other, go out and get what you want, hand it over for wrapping, get it back on Christmas day.

I've bought her a coat, I think. She has definitely bought me a Bushnell watch. Thanks darling xxx.

Reading some of these posts makes me a bit sad that people are missing out on some of the magic of Christmas. Why bother buying your own presents?
After 50 years (2025), to avoid the smile that hides the "Is that it?" hidden face.
I've just said to my lovely wife "Please don't give me another Pro Shop voucher!"

Ah the old oh you can't buy anything from September onwards incase I've got you that for Xmas...

The best material gift anyone can give is money as it can be pooled to buy useful stuff you want rather than stuff you don't need and is wasteful

IE novelty golf tat or lynxs shower kits

For the last 4 years, me & MrsB agreed we wouldn't bother buying each other anything. After all, unless you're of the Christian faith and religious, Christmas is for kids. However, this year we've reverted to "four presents, must be edible..."

Really lovely Candlelit Nine Lessons and Nine Carols Service yesterday late afternoon - with the candle light; Christmas tree, decorations and a full house (many of whom would not consider themselves religious but enjoy singing carols at this time of year) creating a lovely Christmas atmosphere. 18 of us in the choir and a lovely balance for our SATB harmonies (6 soprano/descant, 6 alto, 3 tenor and 3 bass for anyone here in a choir) with our organist giving it laldy on our lovely rather majestic old pipe organ. We have three sopranos who sing the descant parts of the carols beautifully and that makes the sound that the choir makes quite spine-tingling - those attending loved it. Such an uplifting way to celebrate the approaching Christmas.

Each to their own. To some people buying presents for loved ones when you don't know what they want bring crushing anxiety and panic rather than any 'magic'.

Have you ever tried a smile when given a dozen Slazenger balls. 😖

My fav was growing up. 6 aunts on my dad side. Their used to be a stigma of money. Vouchers were fine but money? No so rude apparently

Vouchers are fine.. if you speak to each other!

One voucher for

Hmv
Woolworths
Game
M and s

Etc

So you had just not enough to buy what you wanted for each shop rather than one voucher that you could get what you wanted

That's when the lists first started, November time told by mum to give them a list of things to buy of a set budget (6 x £10 gifts) and then a limit set by nan etc

Overtime it just turned into buy yourself gifts and give to nan to wrap

To now money in a card

I instantly installed this for the wife and I, worked so well so we don't go through the BS years

I think the thing is that for kids they ask “ Santa” so they kinda know what they want. When your the wrong side of 60 or an adult you more or less have everything. The picking what you would like is not a biggie for me. I tend to get things through the year. 👍

Not really, we don’t go overboard and have quite a low spending limit so it’s usually daft stuff we buy each other. I do like to put some thought into it though but I’m drawing a blank this year 🤦🏻

I did 6 years of "winning" our wedding anniversary with amazing ideas for gifts before we agreed to just go out for a meal together lol

These amazing gifts had the wow factor but end up just collecting dust after a month

That's the thing we have done that for years when we are kids "what do you want from Santa" etc etc but when we are adults we are afraid to ask for something we want lol 🤣

My north European ancestors were celebrating the winter solstice long before the early Christians adopted it as their main festival, so I have no problem accepting presents into adulthood. MrsA seems to have forgotten this, so I'm forced to buy my own presents.

She did manage to break her bedside lamp last week but I think it would be broken over my head if I bought her one for Xmas 🤣

That’s pretty much the same for us

We just buy each other little things and spoil the daughter . She writes he list to Santa and it’s pretty much what we would have bought anyway

Surely people know what their other half likes

We have stopped buying presents for each other, both in our 70's what could we want that we don't already have ?

Plus I told her years ago, if there is something you want just go and buy it, don't wait for Xmas.

To me this time of year is for the children.
