Chip and run ratios

I know some of you say you can't believe the amount youngsters get out the blob wedge, well on saturday i had what i consider to be the oposite. My dad got his putter out at every shot within 25 yards, i kid you not. Our home course is very hilly and some of the putts he made were up mounds/banks that you would struggle to walk up. I found myself planting a nice little sandwedge on the green where my dad played his putter. Was quite strange. However it worked for him.

It made me realise that i shouldn't play a club just because it is what your 'should' be playing. I should play with what makes the shot easiest and safest

If I got 50/50 off my SW, I'd most likely curse and chuck my clubs in the lake....would expect much more bite than that!
It's hard to define, but I normaly get a feel for the shot and how much it's going to run. If I'm nearly on, I'll just putt it. If I need plenty of run, might go down to a 7 iron.
Mostly I use my PW and either jab it for some stop or swing through and turn over the face for more run.

good point where did the 50.50 come from? i carry a full wedge 85 yards and it definitely doesnt roll 85 yards! Imagine that.

Same here, If I use my spin mill or md milled wedge I dont expect it to venture any further forward than the second bounce.
There are lots of factors for each pitch onto a green, is the green sloping away from me?, is there as wail that if I chip on and it bounces badly where will it leave me?, can I get a putter at it, can I leave it below the hole etc.
Then factor in the distance and conditions and you should come up with a plan.
I think using a 3 iron etc is a little severe though as its a very long club to be gripping down on when a closed 7 does a better job or putter.

This is something i practice alot, I use every club from 4 to lob wedge depending on how close to the green i am, to how long the run is. If i was right at the greens edge and the pin was 40 yards away up hill i would play a 4 iron maybe.

If i was a foot or two off the green and the pin was only 10 yards away on a down hill, i would use the wedge or 9.

Like mentioned above, there's no substitute for practice and IMO no set club for the chip and run. What ever you feel confident will do the job.

On the same subject what do people think of chipper putters for this job, i personally wouldnt waste my money on them and see them as a bit of a cheats club but then the same could be said for my square driver. My mate swears by them and uses his very effectivly!

MVP's got it in one. Yes, the shots I fizz across the green are those I lean back on.
Still I persevere with a PW almost anywhere around the green and a 7i from further out (30 yds or more)
