How long a ban should someone receive for cheating??

A few months back a member was seen by 2 more senior members of the club, moving a ball out from behind a tree with the back of his club while he pretended to line up the shot, they confronted him and he denied it. They reported him to the club , they have had an inquest and has been found guilty of cheating and has been given a one month ban, personally I don't think the length of the ban is important, what's more important is he is now classed officially as a cheat!!

Hope everyone shuns him now!!!

Maybe after the ban he will never re-offend. A little hash hoping everyone shuns him for eternity.

Sometimes the sentence serves its purpose and makes the person better. Should a driver get a lifetime ban for 12 points, or a shoplifter go to jail forever.

once upon a time such situations would simply lead to the individual leaving the club, and probably the area!

people make mistakes (concious ones) at all ages, and therefore, IMO, there should be a period of time after which someone (in the club environment) should be welcomed back - I don't know what that is but in the area of 2 years?

serial activity, or the elite/professional game are, again in my opionion, different and I have always felt lifetime bans appropriate to professionals (to protect the interests of others livelyhoods)

they had a inquest? Bloody hell its a game of golf, he didnt call a copper a pleb! If my club told me I was having an inquest I would tell them to shove it. Saying that no excuse for cheating and I think a very long ban from comps (i asume it was durring a comp?). Having the whole club knowing he is a cheat is also good punishment that lasts a life time

What if these guys had got it wrong? How certain were they, were they standing next to him?
You have to be 100% sure that people are cheating to accuse them.
I take my practice swing away from the ball when in the rough, usually a good 6'-10' away... Anyone who wants to accuse me of improving my lie or moving my ball will be accused of stupidity and gamesmanship. I understand that the game needs regulating but some people try to ruin other people's rounds, I just hope in this case they were 100% certain!

Eh, are you joking??? Of course they had a hearing/inquest, what you expect them to do??? Just ban him straight off without hearing everyone's side of the story?. Or just forget about it????
Why would you tell them to shove it??? Not even prepared to stand up for yourself???
I don't know exactly how far away the guys were when they seen him move the ball but they were playing an adjacent hole, the cheat shouted fore as his drive was heading into the trees where they were, they saw the ball land behind the tree, they then walked on and looked back to see him using the back of his club to push the ball about 4 feet out past the tree, and yes it was during a comp, the Saturday medal.

Its just the word inquest. If it was as black and white as you say it is then the boss has a word in his ear and dishes out his decision. Sounds like the mason's not a golf club. And was it durring a comp?

sadly the number of court cases around this subject (or threats/actions) makes this a very unwise approach...both for the club, the committee and the individual (boss man).

proper process protects

Yes it was during a comp, the weekly Saturday medal where 200 odd people or whatever had all paid a fiver entry

Yep. The worf 'inquest' leaped out at me too!

An inquest is a judicial inquiry in common law jurisdictions, particularly one held to determine the cause of a person's death. Conducted by a judge, jury, or government official, an inquest may or may not require an autopsy carried out by a coroner or medical examiner.

I think an 'inquiry' might have been more appropriate!

Any ban should be sufficient. The mere fact that he has been banned for cheating is sufficient to 'label' the person imo. I saw one that was for 3 Years - the length that the offender was to have been President of the club for!

An inquest, particularly one involving an autopsy, would render the question of how long to ban rather pointless!

Regardless of the length of ban mud sticks, particularly in places like a golf club which do tend to be insular. I wouldn't shun the guy once he has served the ban but I would be wary if we played in a comp and maybe keep more of an eye out than I normally would. However if nothing happened I think it would be only right to make sure people know that too

Jesus, talk about splitting hairs!!!

I have previously played against this guy and have said that I saw him do nothing untoward when he played with me,

So are you suggesting 1 month is too long? Or that he shouldn't have been banned at all?

Oh and check the difference between these:

A bit more than splitting hairs, if tht's what you are referring to. Maybe a :rofl:smiley would have helped. Here's a couple more!

Thats the thing ... you cheat in sport and it sticks for life!

Does anyone remember the scandal that hit Tidworth GC back in the late 80's? All over the Daily Mail, where the club secretary ( Retd Lt Col ) was caught on VHS video camera cheating in a big comp!! Moving his ball around in the rough with his club. He then was found out afterwards selling off sand to a local builder meant for bunkers and then believe this or not allegedly was caught sha**ing a cleaner in the broom cupboard!!!;) (Any way when the EGM was called a lot of the members bulked and lost their bottle to take him down due to his status and the fact he was secretary etc.. It became a joke and the evidence was there on camera although of course he denied it all which was hysterical. Went to court etc etc but ultimately he left the club I believe after a massive hoo haa. :o How do I know this? I was a junior member and my parents showed me the video!! :) The trouble is is you are found guilty by some sham enquiry set up then you will forever be seen as a cheat and it will never go away unless you leave. This could be a massive miscarage of justice. Secondly if you are clearly found out then for gods sake have a little dignity and walk away rather than embarrass yourself and your family even further.
