Chambers Bay

I think it is great that the US Open is going to Chambers Bay,. Some of the players are having canaries, but that is good too. The US open used to be a dreadful event with courses lined by trees and hideous rough. If you missed the fairway, hack out to the fairway. If you missed the green, impossible to get it lose. The event consisted of lots of 2 irons off the tee and long irons into greens. Boring boring, boring.

In recent years the USGA have tried to re0introduce some traditional values of course design and playing, and the experiment has not always been successful. Shinnecock is a classic old course, but almost brought the event into disparate with a par 3 green that players couldn't stop the ball on, and where they had to water the green between groups. And although many though Pinehurst was a great test when Kaymer won, many hated the aesthetics, including probable presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Chambers Bay will identify a good winner. Maybe a medium length hitter with a tidy short game and good patience. I don't think it will be Rory.

They've just reviewed the score card on the tellebox.

7th is a 508 yard par 4
11th is a 537 yard par 4
13th is a 534 yard par 4
14th is a 546 yard par 4

Two of the par 5's are over 600 yards.

Seems an absolute brute!

Surely a drive and short iron for the forummers although what the pros will make of it will be interesting. Anyone making four pars here will make big strides ahead of the field

went to the Ryder cup at Medinah, where the "rough" was basically a fairway by any other name.

Mickelson in particular was 100 yrds off target on loads of occasions to find himself with a lob wedge out of the "rough" onto the green.

A bad tee shot, should not result in a birdie chance - it should result in a scrambled par being the best you can hope for, or on very rare occasions a miraculous birdie. There is nothing wrong in having to accept that you cant always go for the green, regardless of where the ball lands.

for what its worth, the most exciting golf imo is played when the winning score is around 8 under for the tournament - birdies are out there, but not given away.

Medinah was different in that the "home" Captain gets to set up the course exactly as he wants it(apart from Pin and Tee position) he had all the rough removed to allow people like Bubba and Webb Simpson to hit it as hard as they wanted and still have a shot, thankfully it backfired😃

Wow that's a slog! What's people's predictions for winning score? I admit to not knowing much about the place as I have seen no preview but at that length and the quirky set up surely under par will be rare?

It certainly looks tough but as tough as it looks it's got to be fair.

I think a +2/3 will be a winning score.

Cant wait for this to get underway. The more I see of it the more I like it but I see its still getting a pounding in reviews by press journos lucky enough to be there on a jolly

I think they need to remember this is a Major, it's supposed to be one of the toughest comps to win and in golf unlike many sports, the player is playing the course while competing against the other players

And these will be the same hacks who next month will slate TOC if the wind/weather doesn't keep scores in check

p.s. I'd like to read what they really think of one dimensional Augusta's (manicured) goat track if they ever get the bottle to write it

Will be interested to see how this pans out. My picks would be Phil and Koepka. Quite a few of the players have said in the press you need to be long and creative. Maybe Bubba could surprise a few. I hope its not too tricked up .

Rose if I’m betting with English or Reed as next picks

Just realised Monty’s in the field, don’t know why but I think that’s cool & playing with Jimenez too, Furyk (as the 3rd) might just think he’s entered the twilight zone!

Also is it just my imagination or are Rory & Martin Kaymer getting paired together far too often

Who cares what par is. If a pro can get it from here to there he will do so regardless of what the par is. If he can't he will play for position. The USGA obsession with protecting par seems hard to shift. The R&A have a more sensible attitude.

"One side of this pole is putting green. The other is not. Painted dots will help players delineate the two."

My thoughts exactly.
It doesn't matter how long the hole is, just get the ball in the hole in less shots than the next guy.
Its not like they're playing for their H'cap.

My money is on Gerry Watson.
