Celebs who’ve passed

My favourite ever rugby player. Sheer class. His partnership with Gareth Edwards must be one of the best. Like George Best retired much too early when at his prime. Did allow Phil Bennett to get a few game though. 😉

RIP The King
Was just talking to my old man about him. His first choice fly half ever, and a plethora of fantastic out halves he stood out as his favourite.

Looks like this has become a 1970's Rugby thread now :)
Barry John the Welsh rugby legend has had his final whistle blown 😢 age 79

Only 3 weeks since JPR left us, and now Barry John. I started playing rugby in 1970 in Wales where we lived back then. All the kids wanted to be Barry John, carrying the ball in two hands in front of them. It was that two handed carry, swinging his arms one way and his hips the other that put so many opposition players on their backsides without even touching them. He was a very rare thing back then in rugby, a superstar. Rugby didn’t have superstars till Barry John arrived.

I remember the dark ripple going round when he retired from the game. “Barry John’s retired.” At first, people thought it was a joke. Some people didn’t take kindly to it, thinking he’d let Wales down.

A sad loss but oh what great memories…

Never saw Barry John play ‘in the flesh’ as he retired in 1972 and I only started going to Murrayfield in 1976, but his presence was strongly sensed, especially in these early years after his retirement - he was with Wales every time they took the field…as he will be evermore.

Not one that many (or any possibly) will recognise on here, but Mallorca Lee, a legend of the dance scene passed on Sunday at 51 after getting a terminal cancer diagnosis late last year.

He was instrumental in the huge success of the Scottish scene as part of Ultra Sonic and went on to front Public Domain (Operation Blade) in the early 2000’s.

Rest in peace big man.

No age at all, literally weeks from his diagnosis as well.
Sad news.

Kelvin Kiptum, so young @24.

He thought he could break the 2 hour barrier which would have been some feat

I truly think he'd have beaten 2 hours. Very sad. A huge talent that hadn't reached his full potential in terms of marathon running/physiology. He was a genuine racer too.

Just heard DJ Steve Wright has died. Was presenting Love Songs on Sunday so a big shock. Grew up listening to him
For a generation, I'm part of it, he was an absolute staple. He slid into R2 effortlessly and kept going in the same vein. He never looked overly healthy but there was no sign that something more was happening.

Genuinely sad about this, a cheery voice has been lost.

Mr Angry, Radio 1 Roadshow, takes me back
