compulsory winter mat use, no play from fairways or closely mowed area.

We have had this rule in place now over the last two winters. All members have been emailed about it, signs up by the 1st tee and in the locker rooms and on the odd fairway on the course. shop gives mats to visitors and told to use them.

Several guys are reg seen not using them.

so if your club was on winter mats with no play on the fairway or closely mowed area, what would happen if you got caught more than once... at your club for not using one?

We don't have them, or any rule for them.
However if your club has a rule they must be used, then so be it. I would suspect suspension of membership for fragrant breaking of the rule if we did have them.

I think if it's a rule they should be spoken to and if they keep doing it a warning then maybe some kind of penalty.

We have them and I must admit twice this winter I've hit a shot from the fairway without one because I forgot... could it be perhaps the odd one has done the same?

We have mat rules at our club and, tbh, it always annoys me to come across divots in the winter for people who think because they don't agree with the rules, they don't have to follow them.
For me it's no different to not repairing pitch marks or repairing divots and shows selfishness and not considering the other members of the club.

Why would divots annoy you if it's preferred lies anyway, we don't have that rule in the winter and our fairways are good year round

My first year of playing golf me and regular pp seen the lady captain of the club ignoring this rule a couple of times over the winter...I didn't dare say anything at the time.

Also played couple of times with a cat1 player who openly ignored this rule....but then again he thought he owned the course.

If people have seen others breaking the rules regularly then I'd be reporting them. Clearly it's there for a reason, to protect the course over the winter so why should a few narrow minded individuals be allowed to get away with it and not comply

So in the Trainers on the course thread you posted about correct attire and traditions, but because your course doesn't use mats and Patricks does your happy to ignore their rule  double standards me thinks!

Our club pro told me that anyone caught not using a mat can be asked to leave the course. Most seem to stick to the rule of using a mat, rocket launcher thingy or move the ball off to the side.

Don't like mats myself and the Rocket Launcher works better for me
