got my renewal through today and they have tried putting it up almost £250 which takes it to just shy of a grand! needlees to say i wont be taking them up on there offer being that they put it up last year by £100. The woman tried to explain its due to infliation so i laughed at her and said it hasnt gone up that much and thanked them for the offer but i would have to delcine it.

Then rung direct line and they offered it for £621, hmmm not bad and its better than i pay now so ran a search on the price websites and it rocked in at a smidgeon under 500 sheets :D

guess it pays to shop around

I got a quote for £1100 on my last renewal..rang them...they said they'd do it for £660 then price checked a "sister" company and matched its price of £550... Sorted

definitely pays to shop around. my insurance was £450 but we bought a new car in August and Swinton wanted to increase the insurance by £400 as we were mid term.

The car is newer than the last but is a 1.6 zetec opposed to the 2.0 sport we had before. We cancelled the insurance (and paid the cancellation charge) after "going and comparing" and found a quote through Tesco for less than the original price of the 2 litre.

happy days

I always use a broker who always manages to beat any price comparison site that I use to get "rough" quotes.

My renewal notice arrived today and it's actually down by 15% to just over £200 for my BMW 330! Happy days!

That's because your 84 and live in rural Perthshire! You should be a Subaru Legacy driver!!

:whistle::whoo:

******* insurance companies. Thank God I don't have to deal with them due to a company car.
My daughter Lydia got her first car last year, shopped around for decent quotes and finally decided to go with "Diamond" as they are fairly competitive for young girl drivers. Still cost her over £1,200.00 to insure a poxy little banger of a Corsa.
She got her paperwork through, and the knobs had sent it out with "Mr" Lydia Smith on it, instead of "Miss". She rang them to point out their mistake and they only tried to charge her £20.00 admin fee to put it right!

My 25 year old son looked at buying a Corsa, but the insurance was extortionate. He eventually bought a Vectra which is a lot less to insure. Corsas seem to have a "Boy Racer" image so attract a higher premium.

Try being male, under 25 and living in Manchester. I have had my license for 5 years with 4 years ncb and still can't get insured on a Toyota Yaris for less than £1200. Most companies quote me over £2000 and that's TPFT.

With the exact same details but using a postcode of my friend in Staffordshire, I would be paying £500.

Have you tried putting one of your parents on as named driver? That sometimes gets you a better price.

The elephants have quoted me £330 for my 13 year old Bora, that's 70 quid cheaper than last year, happy days. Not even shopped about yet, but that price ain't bad. Insurance is due on my Birthday next week, so this is my treat to myself

Aye, £1200 is by far the cheapest quote and it's with Admiral using good named drivers to lower the price. It's just the postcode unfortunately.

I guess you just have to suck up and get a black box, if I was a young driver at the moment I would have to do it. Its not "cool" but its probably the only affordable way.

I am lucky, my premiums dropped quickly but I learnt to drive late at 23. Didn't get round to passing before uni, took a 3 year break then learnt again and eventually passed.

I found the two things that made a difference were my job title and the car. I dont care much what car I drive (I am a lot like fellow forumer Midnight) as long as its cheap and economical. Even if I won the lottery I would probably buy a new but cheap economical car maybe even a hybrid, more money for golf and better for the environment.

Most of it is down to luck whether insurers are looking for business when the renewal arrives. A few weeks ago the AA quoted £100 more for renewal. Went searching and got a quote from Churchill at £149 fully comp + wife as nominated user. This was at least £150 less than two years ago for the 7yo Mondeo Ghia 2l diesel.
Sold it two weeks ago for a 10 plate Mondeo titaniumX 2l petrol. Rang Churchill. Same premium. Wow.
Only pay £95 fully comp for my VFR800i motor cycle.
Seriously the premiums for young drivers are shocking. No wonder so many drive uninsured.
