Next year I have the honour of being Club Captain and I am thinking about venues and logistics of my away weekend, what do people think works well and what doesn't.

Any my tips for good venues with two courses stay and play within an hour or two of Cheshire for 16-20 people over a weekend.

Hawkstone Park has two very good courses

Macdonald Hotel but one course is a bit Mickey Mouse

What's your budget ?

Probably £100-£120, I like Hawkstone, my only reservation is that most of the members play it reasonably frequently but it is on the list of possibles :)

Woodall spa one very good course one top class. Lots of accommodation in Woodall to suit most pockets. I would go with team events, thats what I did and it worked well.

not sure if out of your driving distance? We just come back from playing Slaley Hall near Hexham ( about 1.5 hours drive from Preston) and did a Sunday saver:

£100 for dinner and breakfast, 2 rounds of golf which are superb quality and the hotel even organised nearest to pin and longest drive stuff too.

we even got a free upgrade to a better rooms plus there is even free pool in the bar lol :)

Congrats on the honour of being captain and welcome to the forum. I have never been in the post so not sure it's not the done thing, but why not contact a few big courses/golf resorts within your travel distance and mention you're captain next year and see if you can perhaps negotiate something off the back of that somewhere nice.

Thanks HomerJSimpson Good plan.

Any thoughts on a good number to take? nice number to make it social but not too many to that it is a nightmare to organise.

Where have people's best away days been? and what format for the golf, our standard format is Captain vs Vice Captain Pairs then Singles Ryder cup style

Tricky. You dont' want to make it too small and for it to be seen as cliquey but like you say you can't take all and sundry. A RC match vs the Vice sounds fun with perhaps the losing team and the losing overall and the losing players per match being asked for a donation to the captain's charity
