I played this morning in the Captain’s Day, would have played to Handicap but for one silly 9 after a go for it shot that didn’t come off. :o
Quite happy to go to presentation and enjoy the usual clubhouse company after the Shot gun start....Until...it was disclosed that the Captain was in with the best score and was actually going to claim the prize!!!!! :D

I said to him "you’re surely not going to take prize?" He insisted that he was.

I LEFT THE CLUBHOUSE.

Waited for howdidido alert.....There he was on the top of the list

Not a vastly expensive prize as we’re only a muni club with solid working men, but that is not quite the point.
Unbelievable. :(

Can you imagine this happening at your club?

Seems distasteful to claim your own prize, not heard of this done ever. When you see him next ask him if he has seen the film " how to make friends and alienate people "

Did no-one else say anything, my captain would never dream of anything like that!
btw.. what was the prize?

not great prizes, as I said its only a council run muni, but of course its the principle whether the prize was big or small, certainly £25 quid voucher to start with.
Other people knew what the situation was but as I had walked out I'm not quite sure yet if any others actually commented...look forward to next week

Never known our captain play on captain's day. They are always out on the course handing out food and drink, and collecting money for their charity.

Don't think any of our captains ever play in their own event and none to a man would ever claim the first prize. Bad form and not a good advert for his time in office. People have long memories

Not sure that I will be donating any more money to this year's Charity. I will work out monthly contributions we normally make and give it the one that I want to, not him....Not like me to bear a grudge

Our captain spends the day at the half way hut handing out drinks, barbecuing food and collecting money for the charity. He never enters the event.

Scandalous behaviour.

How the hell did he find the time to play a round? Surely he would have been on the 1st tee meeting and greeting, then circulating amongst the members etc.

I reckon he'll be remembered as the captain who claimed his own prize! Not good.

Our Captain contributes to the prizes and greets all the 48 finalists on the first tee with free pencils, tees, drink etc together with a ball with club logo and captains name and year. Ours isn't a charity day, it's one of our major comps and one that everyone wants to win so it may be a shame not to be able to play but if the club Catpain can't follow tradition then what chance have we got? Never heard of any Captain taking their own prize before. Even our golf society don't do that. Sounds like this guy is complete knob to me.

Yes. Our captain bought mid-round drinks and rolls for ALL the players. He fixed up a load of other stuff and generally played the expected role, rather than being out trying to win his own prize!

Ditto

Don't really see a problem with this.

By all means I'd suggest he gave up the prize to avoid all the stick he will be getting but what it wrong with him winning?

So long as the day went well and he organised everything properly what is the issue??

Storming out of the club house? Come on, get a grip.

And remember, it's Captains day so he can do what he likes.

In the event that the Captain actually plays, and I see no reason why he cannot if he is well organised, then if he wins, he wins. You cannot just scrub a qualifying round from the record books if it suits. BUT he should most certainly not be claiming any prizes from his own event. That's poor form.

Our 2010 Captain was a tosser of the first order. Not only was he as tight as they come (I won Captain's Day last year and got a £30 voucher - the same as for any other competition, and the Captain did not put up a single prize), he laid on no drinks, not even a coffee, and asked the committee to pay for raffle prizes.

He was an absolutely appalling choice as Captain, and I say that despite previously being a regular playing partner of his, and nobody was disappointed to see him resign and leave the club part way through his tenure.

And I almost forgot to mention - he managed to get himself DQ'd on his own Captain's Day - that must be some kind of first!

Now, i'm not dissing any of teh above comments, but i must be missing something here

What is it that means you all think your captain should be giving you free drinks, equipment, food etc etc one day of the year and be garteful for that privelege ?
At our club, the captain has got their work cut out organising loads and loads of competitions, matches, stuff - maybe we're different from big clubs. But from what people are saying on here, most captains must be making a mint out of teh year ???

As i said, i might be missing something very obviosu here :(?

Very good point.

It is an honor to be club captain, it usually takes a lot of effort from the captain, friends, family and work (if applicable). It can also be very expensive and though some costs may be covered the time and effort never is. It is generally expensive work being club captain.

I really don't see why him winning is a problem. I agree he deserves a bit of light hearted banter but that is all.
