can a putter make you better at putting?

On this I have to admit that the tool has improved my game. With my old Acushnet bullseye I was very prone to pulling and pushing short putts when I got 'tight' (not as in 'pissed' btw). With my new 'modern' putter I find it a lot easier to do a smooth take-away and forward stroke through the ball to the hole. I have to put this stoke improvement down to my putter - I am not doing anything different.

a new putter wont make you a better putter. a putter might help you over a certain putt but in the grand scheme of things you will be the exact same with any putter within reason.

While I'm in pedant mode, there's another...

You don't FEEL as if you are doing anything different, but the more suited putter allows/encourages you to naturally do something different. Same applies to any change from the 'norm', for example a very much different style putter, a change of Grip - both the physical thing on the end of the putter or the method of holding it - or changing a putter's length or balance. And, of course, many of the 'changes' can be done by simply trying another putter and another.....

I thought it was obvious that you grip down the grip a shade, but keeping everything (else) exactly the same.. just to clarify for those that cant just 'go with it'!! :D

Exact (as you stress) stance/setup would have you hitting the ball on the (practice) swing. Anything else would not be 'EXACT' would it!

Proud, occasionally, to be a pedant!

Therefore no longer the 'EXACT stance/setup'! And remember, it was you that capitalised/stressed 'exact'!

That 'white flash' did seem good for a couple of things though.

When I said exact, I meant that you dont just amble up to the ball and make a half assed swipe above the ball, do everything as you should with a practice putt above the ball. Did I really have to explain it for anyone else?
Forums are where you come on to have a chat and pick up tips etc. It shouldn't be hard work having to explain yourself because someone loves to be pedantic.

I would tend to agree with you on this - I think - except... I find it easier to swing through the ball and to not tweak the real shorties. I have put this down to the weighting of the putter head. As you assert - my stroke has changed - yes - but only in that it has made me more consistent through the ball and less likely to tweak it. My setup and swing/stroke are I think identical - the putter has just improved my consistency.

Of course I don't dismiss the importance of confidence in putting - and the effect that loss of confidence has on your putting stroke and the changes to it that happen. Start holing the shorties and they become easier to hole.

It seems to me that most of the people that I have met who bought a new putter had to tweak it a little by either/ or putting a new grip on because their hands are too thin or thick , or shortening the shaft so that it matches their eyeline over the ball. Worth it in the long run but still a pain in the neck.

If you don't have a repeatable stroke you can use the most expensive putter known to man or something cheap and cheerful from Sports Direct. It won't matter as you'll never hole out consistently. Find a putter style you want to use on the course and get working on the fundamentals and use the winter to groove the stroke indoors.

I went from a macgregor bobby grace, which was fine but I had trouble judging longer putts, to a TM spider and my long putts are significantly better as it has a better feel to it

Both were easy to line up and weigh similar amounts, I guess the newer technology/inserts allow for a better feel maybe (the bobby grace has a copper insert, the TM some kind of polymer)

Interesting! I've tried both and prefered the Bobby Grace. And it looked, marginally, less fugly!

I think I could get on with a Centre Shafter Spider/Insi though!

why do people who putt with a large arc persist with it? it seems bonkers to me to swing a putter like this. it relies so so much on timing.

if I did that ping putting test and it said large arc, I wouldn't change putter, I would change the stroke!
