Found a Callaway ball last night with 'Rule 35' written on it. I'd never heard of this ball before and quick google confirmed my initial thoughts that it looked older than my kids !!!

Below is a couple of extracts from a report in 2000 about the launch of new Callaway balls.

how could it hope to compete in a market dominated by giants like Titleist and Top-Flite?

...

"We set out to cut through the 'noise' regarding the performance claims by most of the competitors' products: all the techno-babble about various polymers and compressions and dimple patterns and claims regarding the longest distance balls," says Chuck Yash

...

The packaging in five-, 10 and, eventually, 20-ball packs is similarly unique while the name, Rule 35, is presumably a play on the current 34-strong categories of official rules governing the game of golf
.

Just thought it was funny how things have changed (top flite anyone?) and how even back then companies were trying to think of new ways to get people buying balls (balls are now available in 2 ball trial packs).

...also for those interested the ball itself was dreadful and was dumped onto the range with a thinned wedge :)

Would balls that old retain any of their original performance?
Don't know by how much they would deteriorate over time..

And Yes - they were rubbish when they came out!

Have hundreds and hundreds of balls a lot older than that - all makes and models.

No discernable change over time that I can detect apart from the premium balls with Balata covers - Maxfli HT100, Titeliest Tour Balata 100's, etc
