Callaway Irons

Had a shot of my matesd 6 iron and I would be seriously looking at the x hot pro if I was in the market for irons, cracking looking set and so easy to hit.

I definitely concur with this. I tried Callaway X Hot Pros recently and was blown away by the ease of hit. The quality of shot was every bit as good as a middled AP2 iron and the distance was better! Bear in mind that I've owned a couple of sets of AP2 with the same shaft as the Callies on test that day. The head is special but I don't accept that the real reason for this is all in the stronger loft, there is something more to it than that. There was no discernible difference in trajectory, it just went further and the mis-hits were nowhere near as bad.

I'm pleased that I held off buying them though, now that HJS has put the forged iron on the radar with this thread. I must give them a go to compare with the X hot Pro's before I make a final decision.

Will be interested in what you make of the X hot Pros Homer.

Had a set of the old X-forged for many years and loved them, great set of irons. Took me many years to find a better iron but finally did with the Orkas, wouldnt swap them for the world but if i had bought from the "mainstream" brands the new x-forged would certainly have been one of the main options. Getting a proper fit and the right shaft is critical though

Lovely looking irons those X Forged.

Homer, have fun trying as many as you can. Do you have to pay for the custom fit at Cally HQ?

From what Rick fundy and others have said re orkas I'd be inclined to try those too.

Either way have fun swinging.....

It did feel heavier and stiffer but not so unmanageable that I couldn't get it away regularly. If I went to Chessington I know there would be a perfect shaft. It was the feel of the head that blew me away. Soft and yet the ball flew off it. Not a firm feel like the Rocketbladez tour but buttery

Buttery you want it's got to be Muira....

I would say that lessons and new irons are probably a waste of time from a golfing perspective but it may be that the latter cheer you up so you should buy them.

I like Callaway irons and have had a set for 10 years. Great for beginner/improver levels of golf. I am just not a good enough player to manage with Mizuno or Titleist irons. They are only for the likes of Brendy really.

Hardly. I've not touched any of my mothers inheritance and finally found a club worth looking closer at.

But what about the (probably quite literally)) hundreds of posts you've mad advocating 'lessons, lesssons, lessons' over new shineys!

Affordability has absolutely nothing to do with that logic!

Are your current clubs limiting you? Almost certainly not! Will a set of new shineys improve your scores? Almost certainly not - at least not these ones imo. Will lessons improve your game? Well, that may be debatable, but they haven't got a lot to beat.

Nothing really wrong with (a bit of) hypocrisy, but at least admit it and temper the proselytizing about lessons over kit!

Proper Custom Fit is almost certainly the way you should go imo. But I'd be very surprised if either X-Forgeds or PX5.5 were the best result! There are certainly plenty of either single brand or independent ones nearby. Apart from Chessington (Cally) there is TM at Wentworth and Mizuno at Burhill (Walton) or Precision in Thorpe/Egham.

Buttery you want it's got to be Muira....

Indeed, when I first hit with the original X-Forgeds - being played by the Scottish Cally Rep before they'd been released in UK - I was playing Miuras (CB201 w PX5.5). X-Forgeds did feel a touch harder, but not in a bad way. They also felt a bit more like a blade too. A club I could enjoy hitting, but somewhat limiting if I was wanting to reduce my handicap!

I would say that lessons and new irons are probably a waste of time from a golfing perspective but it may be that the latter cheer you up so you should buy them.

Now that's my style of thinking! :D

Some of the comments on this thread are ridiculous.

Homer- get yourself the most in-depth fitting you can and enjoy every minute of the experience as well as your new clubs.

i was never "into" callaway products before, but the new Xhot range has really got me twitching....

i'm totally ocd when it comes to the brands in my bag, and the white xhot staff bag really got the bad shiny devil on my shoulder whispering to me...

i will resist, but i think they are the best looking of the 2013 ranges. really can't be doing with the yellow that tmag have gone with.

Maybe so,but if you insist on preaching lessons every time some one mentions new clubs then surely you've got to expect some "rediculous" comments when you start a thread about buying new irons:confused:

I like Callaway clubs, my woods are Callaway. Great clubs.

Do you often go into shops and try different ranges out then? If so, what's made these stand out to make you want to buy them?

Just go for the fitting and put yourself firmly in their hands, even if they suggest something you dont initially like, like graphite shafts for example ;) Let them be the judge of whats best for you and then buy them.

Let us know how you get on.

Just stop telling the rest of the world to get a series of lessons instead! :sbox:

To be fair - which I like to be occasionally - I think Homer only preaches lessons when somebody is thinking a new club(s) will instantly improve their game, cure a slice, etc.

I don't think HJS is under any illusions that new clubs are the miracle cure, but sometimes it's just nice to spend money on yourself. :)

Not interested in peeing competiton between lessons and new clubs but the X Hot Pro and the new Forged models are damn fine clubs especially with the new Pxi shafts in them.

Callaway really have stepped up there game with the release of these new clubs as they were falling behind TM and Titliest imo in the iron market.

The voice of reason.. Finally...
To be fair to Martin, he could hardly be taking more lessons could he? He is following his own advice, he just wants a new set of irons, custom fitted at a specialist centre. What's wrong with that?

Having met, and played 36 holes with Martin, I can honestly say that he's a decent knowledgeable guy who loves his golf, and this forum. recently, it seems that he's become a bit of a whipping boy for certain sections on here, and I 'm beginning to find it a bit unsavoury. I'll admit to a few little digs of my own, but made in jest and I hope not taken in the wrong manner. Fortunately, he seems to have a skin thicker than Scousers head.. Maybe time to lay off him a bit please.....

Come on mate its not like any ones been nasty to him. For the record I like Homer & enjoy reading most of the threads & posts he writes. But he was always going to get a bit of HARMLESS banter writing a thread about new irons.
Good luck with the fitting Homer & if anything I have written as offended I apologise.
