Callaway Irons

Orka.

That's all.
When I played with Paul at Bearwood Lakes, they had a couple of trick shot guys, one of which had a lovely set of Orka blades. Must admit they were very nice, and they had 'Golf Monthly' stamped on the back ! He recommended the irons, hybrids, but wasn't so keen on their drivers.

I think anyone looking at new irons should have a look at what Orka have to offer. I know Paul liked what he saw, as all the way round he kept saying his irons were no good and needed changing.

How can any one recommend Homer spends more money on lessons ?:mad:

Obviously your not familiar with sarcasm:o

To be fair - which I like to be occasionally - I think Homer only preaches lessons when somebody is thinking a new club(s) will instantly improve their game, cure a slice, etc.

I don't think HJS is under any illusions that new clubs are the miracle cure, but sometimes it's just nice to spend money on yourself. :)

The voice of reason.. Finally...
To be fair to Martin, he could hardly be taking more lessons could he? He is following his own advice, he just wants a new set of irons, custom fitted at a specialist centre. What's wrong with that?

Having met, and played 36 holes with Martin, I can honestly say that he's a decent knowledgeable guy who loves his golf, and this forum. recently, it seems that he's become a bit of a whipping boy for certain sections on here, and I 'm beginning to find it a bit unsavoury. I'll admit to a few little digs of my own, but made in jest and I hope not taken in the wrong manner. Fortunately, he seems to have a skin thicker than Scousers head.. Maybe time to lay off him a bit please.....

Was about to stick up for my mate but seems you guys got there before me. If Homer wants new bats AS WELL as having lessons, that's up to him. He's under no illusion that they will make him better but he has been saying for months that he is going to invest some of his inheritance on new bats this year once he's had a chance to try out the new offerings. His advice to others to have lessons is usually good advice to people who appear to be blaming their bats for their troubles.

As for the Callaways, they're real pretty

Lighting the blue touch paper and retiring to a very, very deep Forum proof fall out shelter. Forgive me for I have sinned

Had a fitting session with my teaching pro today to try the Callaway irons. They are a registered Cally fitter so have a decent selection of shaft and head options. Despite my desire for the X forged, once we got onto the Trackman, the numbers didn't really stack up and the off centre ones were punished. I moved onto the X Hot Pro. I loved these. Much more powerful flight and the off centre ones still got out there. However I kept missing these left irrespective of the shaft of the lie.

Then my pro threw the curve ball and gave me Ping G25's. I had always dismissed these as chunky and ugly but I couldn't miss. With an average swing speed of 83 mph and a smash factor of 1.33 I was getting the 7 iron in the regular CFS shaft out to 155 yards carry. However being on the cusp of stiff I swapped to the stock CFS stiff. I was getting a similar distance but the dispersion was tighter. I wanted to hit the I20 as that fitted my eye better but I didn't hit them as well.

So the outcome was that G25 was the best fit for me. I'm officially an old man. Having done the core measurements and with the swing path I have my pro doesn't think I need to have the lie angle tweaked. He has given me the option of going to Ping for a full fitting or to another local fitting centre to see if there is another shaft that may give me even better numbers but having seen the numbers today I would be happy to run with the standard shaft in stiff.

I am disappointed that the Cally offerings didn't come out on top and I'm amazed at just how much difference the G25's meant. It just goes to show that you shouldn't really close your eyes to any make or model out there. I have to be honest and say I'd never have chosen the G25 as I thought of them as too offset and too chunky but the numbers didn't lie. Even the bad ones weren't as wide left or right and the real big misses were going almost as far as my current TP's.

I am tempted to now book a fitting with my teaching pro to hit the woods and hybrids as my preference has always been to have the same make in the bag where possible. I know I like the G25 wood but love the look of the Anser. We've already discussed possible wedge options and so it would seem that any new clubs will now be Ping and not Callaway.

I know new clubs won't make me a better golfer. However the most pleasing thing of the whole session was the quality of my ball striking with all of the clubs on offer. Much more solid and it looks like the last lesson and the recent work I've put in means I am starting to turn a corner in terms of hitting it. I'll continue to have my lessons so we can tweak the swing and make it even more reliable. The only decision I need to make now is whether I want to officially become a golfing old man and whether I want to go to Ping for the full shebang set up.

Forget my last post, lets all point and laugh at the old man using Pings

Really surprised me with this one Homer. No one can say you didn't go in with a open mind. Mate of mine plays G25 irons n they are awesome. Definitely less chunky than previous G range. I haven't hit the Hybrids but intend to soon.

No one more surprised than me. As I said would never have looked at them if the pro hadn't put them in my hand. For the record I did give the TM Rocketbladez tour a bash too but dispersion was a nightmare. Not so much the width but in terms of distances. Some were on a par with the G25 but then we'd get one that flew 10 yards further. The G25 all nestled within a 7 yard pocket. I am scared how good they are

I saw the G25's in the Pro shop, and they are certainly a much better looking iron than the previous G clubs. Who knows in ten years time I might even be tempted.

My congratulations Homer! You've found clubs that suit you well.

I think these will actually help your scores - if not make you a better golfer. Did you take/compare your existing irons btw? I hope so!

There is no reason to match the rest of your set, but knowing your preference and what happens to most Ping users, I expect to see a full Ping bag - possibly even bag itself and clothes too! Their woods and hybrids are really good and there's probably a putter that could challenge the #7 too!

The G25s are indeed less chunky than previous G series and the Forged vs Cast argument is purely esoteric imo.

Enjoy your new shinies!

So did you only try 2 shafts in the ones you bought? The stock regular and stiff?

Good luck with the new shinies :)

Tried the stock shaft, and Dynalite Gold XP, and the Dynamic Gold in both R & S. He thought these were the best suited and to be honest it was suppose to be a 35 minute session to try the Callaways and ended up being 2 1/2 hours and trying the ones we did. He hasn't a huge option being just a driving range and the idea was to only get a feel for the performance today and then book a fitting session at Cally (Pings weren't on the radar). Having seen the numbers with the stock stiff, I am not convinced I am going to get that much more even with a full fitting.

Sounds like you pro has done a grand job, sorting the best clubs for you. Just the question now is a day out at Gainsbrough worth the trip to tweak the shafts or go with what you've tried today. Whatever you decide enjoy and hope they work well. :)

Not actually made a purchase yet. Want to go back and try the woods and wedges and get a full set. Not sure if I'll go Anser or G25 for the driver as both look awesome. Depends what the numbers say.
