I would go for something like an 07/08 Yaris diesel. 1.4 diesel engine developed in partnership with BMW, pulls like a train, cheap to run and tax plus Toyota build quality and reliability.

Cheers for the replies and advice. Going looking this afty before the match. Been searching online and the only newish ones with low mileage seem to be Citroen C1, Peugoet 107 and similar offerings from Seat, Suzuki etc. Not sure I can see myself in one of those even if it is just for work. Mileage does seem a crucial factor in price. Could get a 4-5 year old fiesta in my price range but with 70k on the clock.
