Busted. A Cheat Caught

For all the complaints about people submitting GP cards to manipulate their handicap, not putting in cards can be equally problematic.

Qualifying scores are suspended through winter at my club as we move off fairways and play from black (unmeasured) tees. Unfortunately that means some (especially in the senior's section, where I am a member) just don't put in cards at all. They don't ever play club competitions, just a weekly seniors "roll up" , which, even in Summer is rarely played as a qualifier (except if it coincides with another club competition). That does mean that we have a few players playing off a seemingly inflated handicap and despite scoring 40-50 points some weeks, never get a cut (apart from a 2 week "local" shot reduction as described in the other thread on here under roll up handicaps). I know there are mechanisms available to address this but its a friendly group paying £2 entry so most just accept it begrudgingly.
I've said this before but the usual conclusion ends up being:
Put loads of GP cards in, handicap goes higher, you're a bandit.
Don't put any GP cards in, your handicap is inaccurate so you're a bandit.

Steve just out of interest, our black tees are the longest holes in which only the club playing against other clubs are played on Are they the same at your place.

No, we have whites, the longest, for certain competitions (all the Board comps etc); yellows, for qualifying scores and a lot of club competitions & matches; black, the usual daily tees which are the longest tees kept out through the winter months when qualifying scores are not permitted (as we are off fairways and with preferred lies) and reds which are shorter tees. We also have blues, much shorter (traditionally the junior tees). All but the blacks are formally measured.

Well we just had 4 members get their memberships terminated at our club. In March

What happened was the same 4 guys played together 2-3 times a week (We have comp 7 days a week) and each week one of the 4 would always get one or two NTPs.

This went on for about 8 months and many club members voiced their suspicions of cheating.

Our NTP is dependant on the number of people that are playing that day but it usually ranges between $25 midweek and $40-$45 of a weekend.

Then one of the members who is a shooter wildlife guy over a series of a month without anyone knowing, put wildlife camera's on the 4 holes near the greens.

He then was able to show on days that they won NTP that none of the 4 were anywhere near where they said they were marking.

(Our NTP is done via the MISCORE app not a physical marker on the green.)

He then emailed the edited video to the general manager and the club captain.

It only took the CEO a few days before all 4 had their memberships terminated.

On a positive note, the member with the camera was able to get 6 hole in ones over the month. The vision made several members extremely happy including on guy that managed 2 in 2 days. (Sat and Sun)

Big brother alive and at a course near you soon.

Maybe we need camera warnings on courses.
Sad but nessesary these days.

How four grown people can lose their reputations for a few dollars/ pounds is beyond me 🙄

Daft isn't it what some people do in what should be their recreational time. Is a few quid or winning a meaningless comp no-one will remember worth it?

A mate of mine who was a club pro was informed that if he looked carefully at a specific groups cards in the next event that one of them would guarantee a 2 , the prize at this particular club was all the money that went into the pot was divided up into golf balls.
what they would do is take turns in getting a 2 , but to keep their scorecards "honest" if they scored a 4 on the par 3 , they would write down a 2 and then on the next hole which was a par 4 they would simple add 2 shots to whatever they actually scored.
They never bought a golf ball for years
The Pro spoke with one of the group who denied any wrong doing. The club then introduced drawn groups for the board comps and they seemed to stop getting 2's

Not many know, that any business that has any CCTV must be registered with the Data Commisioners Office. If the golf club is a Ltd company (or business), it must be registered.
Personally I would say they were set up to watch wildlife and oh look we have found a cheating fourball as a bonus. Plus a couple of holes in one.
On a side note, if you are doing nothing wrong you have nothing to fear. Another point is this. If filming something without peoples knowledge in public is breaking data protection laws. Why do police now use dash cams in cars to prosecute people. Some cars have them some don’t.
Some par threes have them, some don’t 😁👍

Maybe a silly question but what is a NTP?

Nearest to the pin.

If I were to own a golf course I think a camera on each green and on each tee box would be installed, with the pictures circling on a screen in the pro shop and/or bar. Getting people to treat those important areas with respect.

Would also help at night, we had a few posts here about vandalism, but not that many lately.
