Interesting thread. Our bunkers were rebuild last year and I'm now getting the same result as the op, must watch links

I am convinced that having had a break of 8 yrs from regular golf (family) it was simply my forgetting my bunker technique. My problem was that, as I had never been taught or shown how to play out of a bunker, I didn't really know what I had been doing right. My ability to get out of bunkers since starting up regularly again has been fortuitous - and in truth it hasn't been very good with little spin on the ball. I was fortunate that our bunkers were suited to the technique I was using.

The answer seems to be the 'bounce' given by the sole of the club. I honestly (even after playing for 40yrs) didn't know about this and didn't realise what it did - but when playing regularly used it without realising it.

LDs video stresses the use of the bounce and use of the 'back edge' of the sole. And it works. Just trust in the technique (and that you won't thin it off the front edge) and the club will do the work. Well that is what I am telling myself. We'll see - when the bunkers dry out @SILH

One of the guys who occ playing with us on a Saturday was telling me about when he was helping out at the Scottish Open last year and got a bunker lesson from one of the Pro's (not a well known name) and he had shown him to try and hit it out the hosel.

I have to say it worked, he was in a few bunkers on sat and played out of them very very well.

I can do that time after time:smirk: wonder what the thought process is behind that advice

The ball position should be forward in your stance. That will help with the shallow divot

Yes indeed - part of LDs advice Playthe same shot from the fairway and yes - you'll thin it. In a bunker - nope - it seems to work. I wonder how much else I have forgotten while on my 8yr sabbatical. I may think my technique is same as it was - maybe it's not and I've simply forgotten what I'd taught myself over the previous 25 yrs. Not having ever had any lessons I don't have anything to recall from memory to check against.

There are two up at the practice pitching and chipping area. One with the old sand one with the new. Our main practice ground is too big - allows me to spray balls all over the place and miles wide of any target. I guess this shows how far wrong some of my shots would go if they weren't stiop by trees or rough - or wehen they disappear oput of sight OOB. So I keep away :)

You may say the practice ground is too big, but when I had a lesson with Grahame I shanked the first five balls into one of the houses, and he didn't let me hit another ball. Next time you see him say hello from me. One of the nicest guys you could meet.

A tip that helped me a bit was to try to get the feeling that you are hitting the back of the wedge into the sand, that way you use the bounce and don't dig.
.
I've had quite a few bunker lessons (Tells you a little about how rubbish I am in bunkers:whistle:) and no pro has ever described this to me, but I liked the sound of it. I'm not a technical golfer- I need very simple swing thoughts, so I thought i would give this a go yesterday.

I didn't plan on going into so many bunkers, but I tried stuey's tip and my playing partner commented on how good my bunker shots were ( I hadn't told him i was trying something new).
Most importantly - not one thin shot!

Thanks Stuey01!

And so yesterday to Newbury & Crookham for a knock with three very golod mates all of 27+ yrs standing. Course was grand - some really good holes - fairways excellent - greens (clay based) had recently been hollow-tinesd and heavily top dressed and fertilised but quite acceptable and rather fast putting surface. Overall - absolutely no complaints and a nice friendly club - and for £23 a round with a County Card you can't go wrong.

So why post these observations here? Well I didn't go in a single bunker - not one - so no chance to try out my revised bunker technique and I so cannot comment upon the quality or depth of the sand :)

Oh yes - I was knackered at the end as there are a few fairly steep climbs. Does not bode that well for getting round 3 rounds @ Minchinhampton on 11th May without having to be carried around the last round :)
