Find it quite interesting a lot of experienced guys saying ditch the LW. I'm a total newb so getting used to a lot of things but something I was really struggling with was up and down shots from 30 feet in.
Ones where it has to be up and down if there is only a small target for running the ball; ie like you said a bunker (or 2) in front of you so you need it to stop dead. Surely its handy to have the LW in the bag for this one shot? I try to use it as little as possible and if no hazards in front will always aim for a target in front of the hole to run it up but there are definitely shots I couldn't play with my PW that I can with my LW
I do keep it in the bag for that exact possibility, or over the winter in a bunker with very hard compact, wet sand where the bounce on my 56 would cause problems but it's a rarely used club and sometimes doesn't come out the bag at all. I just see a lot of people automatically grab their 60 when around the green, with no trouble in front of them as they try to flop it up and on to within a few feet and it's such a difficult shot to execute that it's simply not worth attempting IMHO
