Hello all,

I was just wondering how you all feel about giving shots in bounce matches with your mates, I am lucky in that my playing partners handicaps range from 6-13 so we don't have large differences in shots given. When you are playing with pals do you play full handicaps, 3/4 or scratch matches? Personally, I dislike being give shots as I feel that playing scratch with players better than me has forced me to improve quicker than I would have, but I don't begrudge giving full handicap to players with higher handicaps than mine.

We always play as scratch as like you all my mates are beginners like me

But if I get any better I'm gonna have to start giving them shots as they hardly play at all and I play at least twice a week

yeah pretty much always there will be shots of some sort, not always exactly to the letter of handicapping rules but amicably agreed in advance to create hopefully a fair matchplay game

with one regular playing partner, we started at our actual handicaps but now adjust the number of shots given by 1 based on who won the previous game, so say i have won the last 3 games then ill be giving 3 more shots next time from the first game

If it's just the two of us it's normally full difference

If playing skins it's 3/4 from the lowest HC ( always me :( ) same with 4BBB Matchplay

Over the year I reckon it evens itself out on the winners

If I'm playing a bounce game I invariably say I'm not too fussed on keeping score. I see them as the ideal opportunity to try a few things out on the course outside of a competition environment. If the other guy really does fancy a game I'll usually offer matchplay of full difference for the price of a pot of tea and toast for two, loser buying

My mate and I both 15h/c play two old mates a 13 h/c and 5 h/c from another local club about once a month home and away.
Over the years without fail the low guy will try to diddle us out of shots.
Except when it comes to a invitational comp when he partners me or my mate, then he says we should get the proper h/c, funny that.

Tried to educate pals into the 3/4 and full difference and none of them got it!

To save any confusion we just take full allowance from the course so it's black and white. This is for social bounce games. For my regular roll up and any comps my mind set is scratch.... Helps me focus.

Unless the handicaps are pretty much the same it's 3/4 of the difference in 4bbb and full in singles. Rarely do as Homer when a 4ball as I like the competitive edge.

Depends! Sometimes scratch, sometimes full difference. Always play scratch with some, always handicap with others. Obviously scratch is just with those around similarish standard. One girl I always played scratch when I was higher than her and that continues now I'm the lower one.

Also, quite often, it's just a game without a match between us..... Although, personally, I'd always try and get some sort of contest going!

On away weekends we usually play 4BBB matchplay, with me giving 5 shots (the others play off 12,13 & 19).
The rules usually end up changing mid-round depending on what the scores are like. It's been known to end up at 3 v 1, or the 9 hole score being reversed to give the current losers a chance to have the lead etc.
It's just a laugh, and the losers put a fiver each into the kitty.

we always play scratch, be it skins or 4BBB, Im usually the highest handicap off 6, but win my fair share, plus bragging rights a greater when on the odd occ you beat a 2 or even scratch player.

Always play 4 balls, always play for a fiver a corner. 3/4 taken off low man ie the correct allowance......as above, that's what handicaps are for and usually ends up a close game. Winners buy the drinks so no real impact financially but it's nice to be buying them.......with their money :)

My mate at the club just cannot play a game without something riding on it, usually just a quid, but you'd think he was playing for the Town Hall Clock as he invariably grinds out a win, no matter how well I play and takes my quid.

Just play and have a laugh usually, don't worry about the shots, don't worry about who wins.

Pretty much sums it up

If we do play for few ££ it's full h/cap , normally stableford , keep things moving
Or if just 2 of us, sometime m/play

Not fussed win or lose as long as the banter is good
