Board comps, are they all they are cracked up to be?

TBH who really looks at these boards are they there only to save on some wallpaper and a few tins of emulsion....

I will have a look at the "Club Champions Board" but the rest mean nothing even if the names listed are in gold paint, some folk are easy pleased if you ask me, less time looking for your name on a board and hit the range is my advice:thup:

It's an English thing ... You guys have a Board Comp for everything and their mentioned every month. In Scotland it's pretty much for the Club Championship and Captain's, no fuss golf!

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some clubs down south playing a Stableford for a board comp, flimsy golf!

The Club Championship, at a club I used to belong to, was primarily a Handicap one! I don't believe the Scratch winner even got their name on the board! Can't think of any Scratch Board comps there, though don't think there were any Stableford ones either.

Nothing wrong with Stableford though. It's a method of play, just as Matchplay is. Plenty of Matchplay board comps all over UK. And Matchplay seems to have been a much earlier - at least more visible, even if the format is not known - form of the game than pure Strokeplay.

If this forum ever votes in an 'angry man' replacement for thecraw then I'm voting for you ;)

Sure all the clubs I have played at and visited are all based on Scratch, not many clubs interested in the Chompers Section:smirk:

Some pretty dumb things been said in it already and I have deleted my post.... Are we really this stupid?

Certain topics always go down the same route and this has quickly slid that way. Low handicap snobs vs normal people

I would love to be Cat 1 and so only have a chance to win the club championship, but I am not, so if I win a net board event I am happy to see my name in gold letters.

Louise ... There are guys on here that would want your handicap but a net board comp? This is golf we're talking about, it's hardly cake decorating for a church fete! :fore:

First 2 candidates for the new "self-important" board?

I suppose treating a board comp any different to a normal round may have a detrimental effect to your game?

Many a time i have fancied my chances in the club champs, turned up and hour and half before to warm up etc, and then preceeded to go out and shoot a poor score.

This year i will approach it the same as all comps, 15-20 shots in the net to loosen up and then get out there.

no doubt i will still shoot high numbers though :)

It would seem many are. And arrogant too....

Don't tar all of us with the same brush....

The intention of this thread wasn't to start a high v low handicap punch up. It was just to highlight the number of pretty meaningless board competitions that a lot of clubs seem to have.

I'm sure I've seen a board for 'Best dressed golfer 14-28hcp' somewhere

Being from Portsmouth, i play Hayling a lot with a couple of mates who are members, and i must say, you do have a hell of a lot of boards all the way up the stairs.

BUT, one of my mates is on it, the other isnt. watching the banter EVERY single time they walk past it is makes it all worth it!

The thing about winning a board comp is that at least there is something tangeable for your achievement above the usual pro shop voucher. I would like to go back to actually getting a medal or similar for winning a monthly medal, something that you can keep to show that you actually played some decent golf on that day. My dad has a few medals, tankards etc from competitions he won in the 70s and 80s and they make a nice momento.

I know it sounds shallow but I would rather that than a few quid that you soon blow on balls, gloves etc.

Golf clubs are full of mid/high handicappers with much less low handicappers. For the most part its about fun and belonging, being a part of the social club. That said I have not seen anything like the example above.

The forum has a larger amount of low handicaps prepositionally because forums attract the extreme enthusiasts.

It seems that a lot of folk don't see them as meaningless but anybody who agrees with you are classed as handicap snobs.

The only board that counts is THE SCRATCH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP all the others are there to hide the cracks in the walls:thup:
