Board comps, are they all they are cracked up to be?

Or you might suggest that Scottish clubs are just miserable and tight - and don;lt want to spend money on comp boards - so make up spurious reasons for only having one or two.

But I know that not to be the case :) - or at least exclkusively the case - as my old place Filton only had a handfull of boards inc. those for captain, lady captain and chairman.

But surely if the club deems it fit to go to the bother and expense of having a board for a competition and having winners names put on it - then by definition the competition IS meaningful to the club.

But is it really?

In years time people will look at the Club Champs board and it will provoke discussion about the various merits of past club champions ("I remember when Bomber won in 19canteen - shock to everyone as he can't putt to save his life.. He was 7 up after 9 & nearly bottled it..." ;)Etc etc etc)
Most people in a club know, even if only by reputation, the club champs of their time - are the winners of these other "board" comps known and woven into the fabric of the club in the same way?

Not in respect of recognition for golfing skills perhaps - but they are most definately woven into the fabric of the club as they are on a board. And your golfing ability is not the only factor that by reputation makes a member a recognised and respected member of a club. And to repeat (yes I know - yawn) myself - the club decides if a comp is worthy of a board. The individual takes whatever pride they wish from being on a board.

And if I won the Mixed Triggersomes Wiggley-Diddley Cup 10 yrs in a row, then despite the 'nature' of the competion itself I'm sure as heck I'd be subject of conversation from time to time in the future.

Interesting thread this!, lol

When a club has to many boards for any old Tom, dick or harry competition they lose their importance, while it gives some folk the feel good factor, which I have no problem with its just the same as your job title saying CEO of WIlson vision technicians, when in reality everyone knows you own a set of ladders, a bucket and a sponge and clean folks windows.
I agree stableford is a crap format, I don't agree with all this nett double bogey rubbish, if you had a 10 that's what you had, not a 6!, and ending up on a board for winning something while scoring like that is nonsense.
Our club has, ladies handicap/scratch champions, ladies captains, course record holder, men's scratch/handicap champions and county champions.
As for the low capper shooting +5 and losing to a 26 capper that shot 18 over or whatever, don't you guys have different sections?? We have prize money for, lowest gross A section(0-12) 1st,2nd and 3rd, b section(12-18) 1,2,3 and c section 18+ 1,2,3. Trying to keep, everyone happy.

But you can't win if you do in a medal, you still can in sford

That was my point in my original reply to this thread. How can it be right that you can pick a ball up, not record a score, move on to the next tee and still win. Winning via the back door.

I did think however that you could not pick up in medal play at all. You learn something new every day!

Simple, If you don't see any merit in winning them, then stop entering them. I guess I'm just one of the unlucky ones who started playing from a high handicap. I so wish I could have started as a Cat 1 player but hey ho...

As an aside, have any of our low 'cappers got their name on a board from the ever so brief spell when they were high/mid 'cappers? If so, does it embarrass you? Do you have to turn away in shame when you walk past the offending board?

In all seriousness though, I do agree that it's an unfortunate side effect of a levelling system, whereby the best player on the day may not/will not win. There are plenty of scratch comps/opens to play though, but I guess that a 5 or 6 handicapper might struggle to play against some of the better amateurs...

Good point wolfie, as someone else who has done the hard yards in getting down after going round courses in 140 odd, to down to 6, I really appreciate being a low handicapper. I also treasure the fact that I won a board comp last year. The names have not gone up yet, but when they do I'll be a very proud man. I'll also look across to my mates and give them a wink at the next presentation evening, whether I win another or not.

So as current holder of the Colonel wiggledy-biggledy, winter texas scramble, mixsomes staPleford size 9 (US) wearers, I'm made up.
