'Blowing' up on the last hole

I had a blow-up on our 'par4/18th' just last night, stuffed the tee shot into the hedge and lost the ball so I tee'd off again for a '3 off the tee' then proceeded to top the next shot '4' hit a 9 into the green '5' then 2 putted for a '7' I had been up since 5:00am so just put it down to getting tired, after all it was 7:45pm !...

Sounds like sheer anxiety & trying to steer the ball. I know the feeling well! Easy to say, but play the hole as if it doesn't matter. I've played some of my best golf doing this.

I agree, the reason I ask about the first hole, and any other hole is regarding this.

Treating the last hole as something special while playing it may be the cause.

Play the last the same as holes 1-17.

Often, chasing or protecting a low score, risks are taken or decisions are questioned.

The best course of action is to play the hole to score a net par more often than not. Sometimes there will be a birdie, sometimes a bogey but there will be less doubles etc.

Having played there more times than I can remember I always hit a 3 wood off the last tee. I know this makes the second a long to mid iron but off your handicap it shouldn't be a problem. Driver just brings that bunker into play and you are definitely not reaching the green from that.

PS. How do you hit the 14th green? Seems to be some sort of force field around it. 😃

I have hit 3 wood a few times and had decent results.

I don't have a problem with the 14th. It's a smooth 6-7 for me and generally aim right hand side and my draw tends to bring it in to the middle

Our 18th is the toughest hole on the course, obviously not on the stroke index. 420 yards OB all the way down the right. Trees close in right at the 150 yard mark where you drive the ball. I do have some big numbers down 18 but that's usually because I am pushing for a birdie when I know only that will cut the mustard. If I am playing well and have a good score going I will happily play for a 5 down there.

Well just proves it must be a mental attitude.

Today i I got to the 18th 1up in a match against another club, hit a great diver followed by a rescue club to 15 feet to close out the match 2up.

My thought process is going to be one shot at a time going forward

Thanks for all the tips and comments. Hopefully this will see me closer to cat 1 by the end of the year

Good man straight from choker to bandit in one hole 😂

Well done.

Following on from an iffy front 9, where I was 1 over my handicap, I played ok on the back 9, upto the 16th hole. I then birdied the 16th and 17th, putting me 1 under handicap and knowing that a par (net birdie) on the last would secure me th 0.2 cut needed to get down to a playing handicap of 4.
SO I proceeded to hook my tee shot, hack outsideways and under hit my wedge shot. Thus giving me about 40 feet for the par. Three shots later I come off the green having played to my handicap thanks to a double bogey 6.
Not the first time I've done that this season - I just can't close out a good round.
