An obvious one I know but just a word of warning when attending the range after it has been raining.

Make double sure that both feet are on the mat before teeing off. Unfortunately I did not notice that my right foot was on the plastic frame surrounding the mat, one minute I was swinging an 8 iron, the next I was in a heap on the floor with my right foot pointing behind me :) :)

One trip to A&E later and I am now the proud owner of a broken ankle :( :( :(

Six weeks in plaster with no golf. Even when the plaster comes off I imagine it will take some time before I can full swing again due to the twist required on the right ankle on the follow through.

Anyone else come back from a broken ankle? I know we all heal at different rates but any indications of what to expect once the plaster is removed?

I suppose at least this gives me the opportunity to practice my chipping and putting.....

Rob2 :(depressed :(

OUCH! That sounds like a very nasty break; did you break / dislocate the two bones?

I broke mine a few years back and have since developed arthritis in it. Make sure you do all the rehab work and start taking if you are not already Glucosamine + God Liver oil supplements.

All the best with the healing mate, feet up beer in hand Masters on TV, it could be worse.

I really feel for you Rob2 :(
I too am in the same predictament as I broke my ankle last week playing badminton
I have been given a temporary cast (really heavy) until the end of the week when they hope some of the swelling will have gone down enough that my ankle can be re-xrayed and they can see the full extent of the break :(
Keep positive and as mentioned do exactly as you are advised by your therapist when the plaster comes off.
Take care and maybe work on your mental game.
Again try and keep positive!!!

Cheers for your kind words guys.

Hywel, not sure what I have broken, the Doctor wasn`t very talkative, he just said that there were two bits of bone somewhere that they shouldn't have been :D

I currently take cod liver oil so hopefully it will help recovery. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that so I have just ordering some putting training aids and a chipping net online so I should be all already to go once I can put some weight on it.

Can’t wait to read jealously about the great day you guys will be having on Friday at Ascot. I will be sitting on my arse praying for rain.......... :D :D

Shattered my right ankle 5 years back and I couldn;t put any weight on it for 9 weeks. Total of 3 months off work and probably 7 or 8 months before I felt ok to play again. I only got 75-80% movement back which, bearing in mind they reckoned 40-50%, I'm not displeased with. As its the right one it doesn't take too much strain on the swing - if it had been the left then that might have been a different matter. I get twinges from it and I'll get them till the day I die I expect and I find it hard to play 2 days running but I just get on with it.

Believe me - it does get better and I feel every ounce of your pain!!

Good Luck

Have just seen your post. Another sufferer! However as a man, I am sure I am suffering much more that you :D :D :D

Rest up, we will have to compare recovery notes in a few weeks.

Sorry to depress you mate but metcheck is forecasting 18 degrees and sun for friday. Never mind I hope it gets better soon and that you get out on the course for the summer. Don't rush it though as you'll cause more damage and be off longer. Plenty of golf on TV coming up

Who says golf isn't a dangerous sport! I feel for you and wish you all the best on a speedy and full recovery. Still at least you have some good golf on the box coming up.

Also, if you haven't already, the money that you would normally be spending on clubs/balls etc you can spend on a Sky Sports/Setanta subscription :D

ooo this post has put my broken toe into perspective a bit. Granted I'm now out for 6 weeks as well and it does bluddy hurt but I don't have to put up with a long length, itchy, irritating plaster cast! Best wishes with your recovery- I'm going to give my short game some focus (I can stand fortunately) so hopefully my golf won't end up in a totally dire state.

I managed a rotary fracture a few years ago (taking the dog for a walk!); tib in 3 places at the ankle and fib in one just below the knee, ripped all the muscles between knee and ankle.
It was internally splinted. The advantage of that was that I could do the hot and cold treatment to get the swelling down, which you can't.

afraid it's a case of taking the medicine; don't rush it, do the physio but there's nothing to stop you doing a bit extra - so long as you don't over do it.
I built a wobble board which I used to stand on to watch TV, really helps to get the flexing back and re-build the muscles. I was much quicker getting off crutches as a result. unfortunately I had to go back in and get the splint removed as the bottom screw was obstructing the ankle movement and I could feel the load on the top one. so overall mine was about 18 months.

mind you I didn't play golf then, I was into clay shooting so couldn't do that.

it's fine though, never feel it playing golf and rarely think about it unless I hear of someone else doing it.
