Hi all

I'm looking to pick up a new (to me driver) but don't have a huge amount to spend (around £100) I currently have a 10.5 Nike SQ Tour (got to be about 15 years old!)

Have you any suggestions for what would be the best value second hand driver to pick up (notwithstanding getting the right shaft, etc)

Would something like a Cobra F6 or F7 be a fairly good choice in regards of distance / forgiveness? I was think adjustable angle and a std loft of 10.5? Ping G Series?

Ideally I'd like to do a full fitting but with everything closed that's not a goer at the minute

For info I have a WHS of 7 but driving is a weakness in my game

Cheers

I picked up my cobra LTD for around that figure a couple of years back. So good that Bryson had one in his bag last weekend apparently...
There's an abundance of choice if you go back a few years, and most of them will sound better than the Nike. Not as much of a conversation starter though...

Ping G25 just an amazing club, adjustable and under a £100
I’ve tried 20 drivers or more over a couple of years all the new pings and my G25 seems to suit me perfect.
I never got fitted just tried a mates out and loved it and bought the same spec.

If driving is your weak link the the SLDR may not be a good choice.
General verdict was good if you hit the middle, less so away from it.
But others have used it well...
I don't think you can go far wrong with any of the Ping G series
The Callaway Big Bertha (the blue one from 2014) and X2Hot were both good and should be in the price range too..

Another vote for Ping, you may well find a G30 for that money now. If for any reason you don't like it you'll easily sell it on without losing much.

Cheers, wasn't the SLDR super low spin though & not forgiving?

I'm not sure about "forgiveness", If hit one out of the toe, I don't expect a good shot. Some people hated it, But for me using it, nothing could beat it for a good few years. It depends what your weakness is in driving, but I assume with that HC you are good enough to find the middle.

I'll check my launch monitor data, but if i remember it was about 2200-3000 spin.

I have an F6, bought on here from a fellow forumer (possibly a made up word). It's a smashing club, very forgiving, reliably straight. In the right hands it also goes a very long way. Those hands are not mine but I have seen it with my own eyes :D. (I've just noticed post #8 and realised you are off 7. You will have no issues with this club and whacking it a long way)

Worth a go if you find one available.

I use a Cobra King F7 driver, it isn't the longest but stays pretty straight ( I did switch the shaft to one I have used before so that helps). It is a very forgiving club

Ping drivers have all been great over the years, can't go far wrong buying the best one of theirs that's within budget. I had a G30 SF Tec which was very good, I only got rid because of upgrading to the G410. Dunno if G30 or G25 will be in budget given how prices have gone up in the last year - either one will work though.

Failing that, the original TaylorMade M2 gets rave reviews everywhere. I dunno if that's around £100 these days.

The best driver i've had is the M2 mark1, i think that can be had for around that amount. forgiving and long, tested it agaist a few new drivers in 2019/20 winter and none came near it TBH

if you get one with the right shaft, can't be beaten, won't be getting rid of mine till it breaks

If you’re off 7 then you must be able to hit a ball. And fair enough driving is a weakness but a lesson or two might sort that out. Regardless you’re going to need a decent weapon so as much as I would have agreed with the ping Gs, I gave my buddy my old Titleist 915 and he loves it. Feels like it makes him hit it out of the middle because he can feel when he doesn’t. He’s driving straighter and further than ever and he’s off 21 (for now).

Try before you buy if possible. And obvs get a lesson when they’re allowed cos it could just be your setup is a bit off.

G25 seems, to me, to be a great option! A touch of adjustability and pretty forgiving. I auditioned/got fitted for one when they first came out and my playing mate (sort of) regrets 'upgrading' from his. Certainly a lot quieter than the SQ!! I'm an Adams fan these days (and have been for a very long time), so the XTDs seem to be a great all-round Driver! Though, as a wimpy Senior these days, I use a 'specialist' Adams - with a light Matrix shaft (I've always been a great fan of Matrix - now LA - shafts too!)! And the XTDs tend to have Matrix shafts.
FWIW. Here's a review when it came out...https://www.golfwrx.com/190444/review-adams-xtd-driver/ Might be a touch out of your price range in the 'open' market though - but we could negotiate on any of the several I have in my 'collection'! No bias at all!!

Is there not a range close by with a shop that you could try a few before buying.

Otherwise its just pot luck and trust me I've been there many times over.

This is the real key imo! I have my favoutite(s) but the key, imo, is finding the SHAFT that works - for you! The head, imo, is rather less important as they all work pretty well!

Ping's seem to be popular - I'll have a good root around Golfbidder, ebay, etc and see what I can find.

When I said I had the Nike SQ, it isn't wasn't the square monstrosity that sounded like a rock in a coke can, it's the rounded version. It's not a bad driver, but I think something that is more up to date would be the way to go.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll see what i can find
